About the Item

In this contemporary figurative mixed media embroidery painting, glitter, acrylic, freshwater pearls, sterling silver earring, cotton embroidery thread and beads on canvas depict a heroic scene of women climbers in skirts, blouses and hats holding a rope, scaling the side of a mountain. Signed on recto. From the artist's statement: "The painting Higher Than Expected brings to life a historical photograph of Lucy Smith and Pauline Ranken in 1908 climbing the Salisbury Crags in Edinburgh, Scotland. Barred from joining the men’s climbing club on account of their sex, they defiantly formed the first women’s climbing club in Scotland. As experienced climbers and with only a rope between them for safety, they assumed more dangers than the men by climbing in “traditional” women’s clothing such as long skirts, hats, and blouses. When the men weren’t looking, some club members would switch to bloomers to climb." Katrina Majkut is a Ukrainian American visual artist, curator, and writer who is dedicated to understanding how social traditions impact social and civil rights. She uniquely pushes the boundaries of observational painting by using embroidery and craft materials as a painting medium and challenges its inherent social bias and history. Her heavy use of still lifes pioneer new intersectional, fourth-wave feminist strategies, which she calls Boomerang Intersectionalism. Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows over 40 times across the U.S. Majkut exhibits nationally in both commercial and college galleries, where she lectures on reproductive rights, gender, art activism, and textile arts. Majkut was listed as one of four international artists starting a new chapter in feminist art by Mic Media and repeatedly listed as a must-see artist by Hyperallergic magazine.

"Pink Me Up" paper collage, hand-embroidery, french knot, blue and pink
By Kelly Kozma
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This piece titled "Pink Me Up" is an original artwork made from collage, hand embroidery, and latex paint on canvas by Kelly Kozma. This piece is shipped in the pictured white frame and measures 6"h x 6"w framed. The catalyst for this new body of work was a jar of leftover magazine cutouts from a collage I made in 2010. Reusing leftover materials as well repurposing items that might end up thrown away, has become a very important part of my process the past decade. Stumbling across this jar of coin sized images that had waited patiently on a shelf for 12 years, ignited my creative process and drove me to explore collage in a new way. Unlike the piece from 2010 in which I assembled the images by piecing them together, I decided to examine each individual cut out on its on. By removing the image from any other context it allows you to focus solely on its meaning, purpose or feelings that it may evoke. Each image is embedded in a field of French knots which felt like a way of creating a time capsule of sorts for the object. Another inspiration behind this collection is my six year old son and his endless piles of sticks, stones, leaves, etc in our home. Only to him they aren’t sticks and stones, they are treasures. His ability to find a tiny twig or scrap of paper and not only cherish it but give it a backstory of why it is so special, is a beautiful thing and one I have tried to tap into with my new work. By placing a picture of a rubberband ball...
