"Laurel Canyon" is a contemporary framed mixed media work on canvas by Maura Segal, with abstract shapes and color blocking. The artist cuts hundreds of paper shapes and adheres them to the canvas under a layer of paint for an effect that feels both classically Mid-Century Modern and Upscale Contemporary.
This piece is finished in a silver floater frame with subtle beveling and whitewashed effect along the frame’s interior and sides. Pricing includes the pictured frame. The unframed dimensions are 36 X 36 inches.
About the artist: Maura Segal’s inspiration is drawn from modern architecture and minimalism. In her work, Segal meticulously composes with thin, hand-cut pieces of paper before adding acrylic paint in expressive color combinations. The artist completes the work with another layer of long, delicate strips of paper to create dimension and playful movement. Maura Segal explores the contrast between the negative and the positive, the counterpoint between lines and shapes and the coexistence of two- and three-dimensional planes.
Segal received her BFA in Graphic Design from California State University. Segal’s work can be found in many private and public collections including the Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital, Los Angeles and the Albamarie facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Maura Segal
My inspiration is drawn from modern architecture and minimalism. In my work, I juxtapose layers of paper with acrylic paint and a layer of thinly hand-cut paper strips insinuating the volume of three-dimensional sculptures. I enjoy the contrast between negative and positive spaces, the counterpoint between lines and shapes and the coexistence and of two and three dimensional planes.
