This is a Autograph Letter Signed by Jean Dubuffet and addressed to Nesto Jacometti.
Vence, November 28th, 1957. One page, single-sided. On watermarked paper. In French. excellent condition, with two holes for archiviation.
An amusing letter written by the founder of Art Brut, Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, 1901 - Paris, 1985) to his graphic publisher Nesto Jacometti (Locarno, 1898 - 1973), could permit us to go into the everyday life of the artist: the practical, economical, and logistic issues, the sold of his artworks, the prices, and the circulation of his original prints, and above all his clashes with the technicians of the trade!

Nesto Jacometti is still today a fascinating figure of the Locano and International cultural scene of the last century. Collector and editor of graphic art, he was the promoter of two important editorial projects and adventures: the Guilde Internationale de la Gravure and L’Oeuvre Gravée
Born in Locarno at the end of the 19th century, at the age of 30 he left Ticino to move to Paris and immerse himself in the bohemian atmosphere of Montparnasse. The war forces him to return to Switzerland, to Geneva, where he works in the journalistic field and he knows figures as Albert Skira and Pierre Cailler. With the latter one a collaboration born and resulted, in 1949, in a printing guild: an edition of etchings and lithographs destined for a wide circulation of the Paris School. During all his life, Jacometti collaborates and involves artists such as Rufino Tamayo and Jean Lurçat, Antoni Clavé, Zao Wou-Ki, Alfred Manessier, Gustave Singier and Zoran Music. He was awarded at the Venice Biennale in 1953, with the Critics' Grand Prix.In 1955 Jacometti engaged in the new publishing initiative, L'Oeuvre Gravée, calling new prestigious names on the Parisian art scene. Many artists owe their initiation to the art of engraving to him: Marino Marini, Massimo Campigli, Zao Wou-Ki, Johnny Friedlaender, Corneille, Max Ernst and Alberto Magnelli.
During a period of growing success for Santomaso who in 1954 won the First Prize for Italian Painting, in 1956 the Graziano Prize from the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan and the Marzotto Prize at the Valdagno International Contemporary Painting Exhibition in 1958.

Jean Dubuffet
Jean Dubuffet was a seminal French artist known for his prints as well as his primal figures and sculptures of vernacular subjects.
Dubuffet’s adoption of the term Art Brut or raw art, referred to the art of children, prisoners, and the mentally ill, was a reaction to what he called “art culturel” or refined art. It was his desire to break from tradition by implementing rudimentary mark-making and emulsions made from sand, tar, and trash, as seen in his work Grand Maitre of the Outsider (1946).
“A work of art is only of interest, in my opinion, when it is an immediate and direct projection of what is happening in the depth of a person's being,” the artist said. “It is my belief that only in this Art Brut can we find the natural and normal processes of artistic creation in their pure and elementary state.”
Born on July 31, 1901, in Le Havre, France, Dubuffet went on to study at the Académie Julian in Paris. While at school his peers included Raoul Dufy, Suzanne Valadon, and Fernand Léger. In 1918, after attending classes for only six months Dubuffet dropped out. Taking over his father’s wine business in 1924, he didn’t return to making art until the early 1940s. The artist would go on to form the Compagnie de l’Art Brut with André Breton and Slavko Kopač.
Dubuffet died on May 12, 1985, in Paris, France, at the age of 83. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
