About the Item

Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio: Massive, black, porcelain, pleated or plissee vase, 1968 - The pleated vase is known as Martin Freyer’s best work working with the ancient theme of drapery in art Freyer worked as a portrait artist as well as a graphic and Industrial designer for surface decorations and structures which informed his signature style of dispensing with color and using the surfaces of objects as the decoration, a distinctive feature of his work. - The Plissée vase appears to be made from or draped with a finely, pleated textile which emphasizes and softens the contours of the curvaceous form. - The base and interior have a contrasting glossy glazed finish. - The black monochrome enhances the color of flowers and stems that are displayed in the vase. - This vase is in exceptional original condition and has come from a private collection. - Signed Martin Freyer, stamped Rosenthal Porcelaine Noire, Studio Line. Bearing private collection number 187. Diameter 30 cm, 12 inches, height 43 cm, 17 inches.

Alan Wallwork Vessel Vase Pottery Sculpture TOTEM White Brown Terracotta
Located in Eversholt, Bedfordshire
Alan Wallwork (1931-2019): Organic landscape sculptural vessel, 1960-1965 -Exhibiting the articulated, inventive, organic qualities & tactility of Wallwork’s early oeuvre for which he is best known - This sculptural landscape vessel has been handmade by coiling, slabbing and shaping the clay. The totemic form and pitted and pierced surfaces draw on the abstract landscape and tactility of elements in nature. matte glazes and oxides have been skillfully used to enhance the rich textures of the surfaces and the organic aesthetic. - Wallwork is one of the great individualists in British pottery, developing an archetypal language that echoed some of the wider artistic obsessions of that period, what the art critic Herbert Read called the “postwar ferment” of sculptural activity. - This piece was made during 1960-1965, the time that Wallwork was sharing a studio in Greenwich with Bernard Rooke and comes from a private collection along with a waterscape vase by Rooke and a bottle by Robert Fournier...

Massimo Micheluzzi Black Murano Glass Vase, Hand Blown and Battuto Cut, 2002
By Massimo Micheluzzi
Located in New York, NY
Contemporary Italian artist Massimo Micheluzzi's hand blown and battuto cut black Murano glass vase was made in 2002. Incised signature to underside: [Massimo Micheluzzi, Murano, 2002]. Image 6: Massimo Micheluzzi (Italian, born 1957) Artist's Bio: Born in Venice in 1957, Massimo Micheluzzi was introduced to the world of glass in the late 1970's as a young photographer for the renowned Venini glass factory, an extraordinary experience that over time will prove to be decisive. Following a long and fruitful apprenticeship in the furnace, Micheluzzi started his personal journey in the late 1990's. His work has constantly evolved since then as he continues to explore new ways of mastering the material, whilst always remaining ‘true’ to the nature of glass. Working alongside his master glassblower, Massimo Micheluzzi uses the techniques that have defined the Murano tradition intervening directly on each phase of the creative process. Striving to balance tradition and innovation, he applies these ancient crafts to achieve a uniquely modern aesthetic. Micheluzzi’s work is deeply embedded in the life and history of the city of Venice and constantly inspired by its watery surroundings and architecture. His eclectic body of work shifts between fluid and organic shapes, iridescent transparencies and opaque carved surfaces as well as elaborate colour combinations, mosaic patterns and sculptural forms. His works have exhibited in cities all over the world and are in some international museums and various public and private collections such as the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Corning Museum of Glass in New York, Muse´e Des Arts De´coratifs de Paris, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Museo del Vetro di Murano in Venice and Villa Necchi...
