About the Item

This superb Scottish Abstract oil painting is by noted sixties Edinburgh artist Alexander McNeish. An early work, painted circa 1957 when McNeish was just 25 years old, it demonstrates the potential McNeish had and went on to fulfil. There are bold lines and colour and the heavy impasto has been applied with a knife in places and scraped away in others. A really strong, confident Scottish Abstract and an excellent example of McNeish's work during that early period. Provenance. Artist's estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, 28 inches by 18 inches unframed, in good condition. Framed. Gallery frame 35 inches by 25 inches. Excellent condition. Alexander McNeish (1932-2000), otherwise known as Mac was a Scottish artist who was an inovative figure in the 1960's Edinburgh art scene. Alexander McNeish was born at Bo'ness, near Linlithgow on the Firth of Forth, Scotland, the son of a coal miner. He attended Edinburgh College of Art from 1952 to 1957, studying under John Maxwell. In 1960 he exhibited with Albert Irvin at Galerie Im Griechenbeisl. Mac invited Irvin to stage an exhibition at the 57 Gallery. It marked a turning point in Irvin's career and the two developed a life-long friendship. McNeish played an extraordinary role as an exhibition's organiser, staging shows in disused shops and offices. Like Many Scottish artists such as William Gear McNeish moved south and taught at Wolverhampton College of Art in 1962 and was head of painting at Exeter College of Art and Design from 1965 to 1980. In 1963, 10 of his lino prints illustrated a Gael Turnbull book of poetry called A Very Particular Hill, a lino cut of his also illustrated a William McGonagall poem in the British periodical Poor. Old. Tired. Horse. His work can be found in the collections of the Manchester Art Gallery. the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, the Arts Council and the City Art Centre in Edinburgh. McNeish was one of a group hard core Scottish art teachers known as the Scottish Mafia. His best work was a combination of spontaneous brushwork coupled with vibrant colour.

This very striking exhibited Scottish Abstract oil painting is by influential Scottish artist Jack Knox. A brilliant example of his work from the early sixties and which was exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1965. Titled and dated 21.2.64 lower right. Provenance. Exhibited Royal Scottish Academy, Exhibition 1965, Edinburgh. Condition. Oil on canvas, 51 inches by 36 inches unframed and in good condition. Housed in a gilt sixties surround frame, 53 inches by 38 inches framed and in good condition. Jack Knox RSA (1936-2015) was one of the most influential artists to work in Scotland in the second half of the twentieth century. Born John Knox to a family of tailors in Kirkintilloch, Knox studied at the Glasgow School of Art (1953-57) where his drawings were noted for their mature draughtsmanship. After graduating, Knox went to Paris to attend the atelier of Cubist artist, André L’Hȏte. During his time in Europe Knox digested the various art movements of the moment, including Surrealism, Tachisme, Colour Field and Pop Art. Visiting the great museums, he was particularly interested in Analytic Cubism and Georges Braque’s intimation, rather than description, of object. He also went to Brussels to visit the first major show of American Abstract Expressionism in Europe. He returned to Scotland eager to establish his own style, drawing on everything he had seen in Europe. In 1960 the Glasgow Herald presented an exhibition during the Edinburgh Festival of young artists from the west of Scotland. Knox was selected to show alongside George Devlin, Carole Gibbons, Anda Patterson, Douglas Abercrombie and Duncan...
