About the Item
This minimalist portrait is by respected contemporary artist Aron Hill.
Aron Hill's compositions are bold in form with crisp, clean lines often painted in vivid colors. In this dramatic piece, two human-like figures appear on either side of the canvas—the pared-down forms representing two mothers. A bright red sun, a favored image symbolic of a guiding light hangs between them.
This painting in acrylic and ink is designed to honor the caregivers who looked after Hill’s adopted daughter—one biological mother and one foster mother.
The simple, graphic form is reminiscent of one of Hill’s early artistic influences—Marion Nicoll, a renowned 20th-century abstract expressionist painter from Alberta. Hill’s color palette is restrained—black, grey, tan, and navy save for the pop of red.

Aron Hill obtained a BFA in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2006. They have exhibited across Canada and in Dubai. Hill’s work is held in private and corporate collections.

Aron Hill's practice is focused on a formalist type of painting that recalls aspects of minimalism and Color-Field paintings though with references to the figure throughout. They find conceptual company in the late modernist paintings produced particularly in Canada. The choice of primary colors and a restricted medium is a conscious restraint informed by Hill’s artistic influences such as Jack Bush and William Perehudoff. The work's graphic nature relies on the sheer flatness that this medium produces.
Hill currently lives and works in Calgary, Alberta. They graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design in 2000 with a BFA in Interdisciplinary studies. Hill then completed their MFA at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Hill has exhibited internationally, and occasionally lectures and writes.
