Michael James Bell is a contemporary artist who goes under the alias ‘Bael’. He lives and works in the North East of England. His unique visual style plays with beauty and the human form; it is raw, energetic and tense. Bael works with a range of mediums and techniques, favouring inks and line drawing. The immediacy of this approach enables him to produce works that pack an emotional response with minimal distraction. His work is honest, haunting and simplistically complex.
“My work is about capturing human emotion and form with a sense of simplicity – to express something complex in as few words as possible”.
Bael is self taught. He is heavily influenced by German Expressionism, Art Nouveau and Japanese Anime. Stark and haunting figures and monochromatic tones dominate his current practice.
Related Styles & Artists:
Bael’s work is grounded in minimalist abstraction and monochrome painting, characterized by a focus on tonal contrast, spatial balance, and visual clarity. His black-and-white compositions relate closely to the visual languages of Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Ryman, and Ad Reinhardt, emphasizing formal restraint and perceptual nuance.
These works resonate with the aesthetics of Minimalism, Process Art, and Hard-Edge Abstraction, drawing visual parallels to Donald Judd’s structural clarity and the reductive precision of Frank Stella. Ideal for collectors engaged with contemporary minimalism, geometric abstraction, and the enduring influence of 20th-century formalist painting.
