About the Item

This modernist, contemporary, geometric abstract painting is by renowned artist Burton Kramer. At once lyrical and expressive, Burton Kramer’s modernist paintings often feature musical themes. The Canadian artist creates joyful compositions using a selection of geometric patterns—here rectangles, triangles and lines that play out across the canvas like notes on a scale. The colour palette is a delightful blend of both hot and cool colours—burgundy, orange, blues, greens, taupe, yellow and black against a pale sky-blue backdrop. In musical terms, a fanfare is a short passage which is often played by trumpets, French horns or other brass instruments designed to add a ‘flourish’ to a piece. “My paintings are music made visual; they deal with rhythms, syncopations, tonalities and moods. Their primary messages are sensory, and not literal.” Burton Kramer He is one of Canada's most influential and gifted graphic designers. He designed the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation logo in 1974. Kramer trained at Yale University (MFA), The Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology (BSc), The Royal College of Art, London (Fulbright Scholar) and The State University of New York. Kramer has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Arts Ontario, The Order of Ontario by the Province, an Honorary Doctorate from Ontario College of Art & Design and was named a Member of the Order of Canada. His work is held in many private and public collections.
