About the Item

Signed and titled oil on canvas by French cubist painter Camile Hilaire. The piece beautifully depicts a man at a port beside boats coloured in reds, blues and oranges. A wonderfully painted work in the artist's distinctive style. Signature: Signed lower right and titled verso Dimensions: Framed: 30"x37" Unframed: 29"x36" Provenance: Private French collection Camille Hilaire was a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also worked in the free academies, including that of André Lhote, whose teaching had a major influence on his work. He executed numerous mural decorations, tapestries, stained glass windows and mosaics for embassies, cruise liners and public buildings, especially in Nancy. His work was abundant and clearly decorative in a style of Post-Cubist construction with a broad range of colour in acid tones. He is particularly known for his Orchestras, Horse Races and 1950 Greenhouses. He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts first in Nancy, then in Paris. Camille Hilaire participated in numerous collective exhibitions in Paris including: Salon d'Automne, Salon des Indépendants, Salon des Tuileries, Salon de Mai, Salon des Peintres Témoins de leur Temps. He also exhibited abroad. Solo exhibitions include: Paris (1951, 1957, 1961, 1965); New York (1954 and 1956; Geneva (1958). He received numerous awards: a travel grant from the French State (1947); Venice prize (1949) Antral and Casa Velázquez prizes (1950); Prix de la Société des Amateurs d'Art (1958) Museum and Gallery Holdings: Épinal (Mus. départemental d'Art ancien et contemporain): Landscape Paris (MAMVP) Paris (MNAM-CCI)

From a young age, Modest Huys worked in his father's painting and decorating business and later studied at the "Gentse Nijverheidschool" (Ghent Industrial School). Georges Dayez , born on July 29 , 1907 In Paris where he died in 1991 , is a French painter , engraver and lithographer of the new Ecole de Paris whose works have been regularly exhibited with those of non-figurative painters. Georges Dayez is the eldest son of the editor Jules Dayez, a native of the North and a son of a peasant, who in 1905 had taken over a small-size engraving studio in Paris rue des Marais, printing in particular gravure reproductions of eighteenth- century images E century. His mother, Marie Brard, was born in Neuilly in a Norman family of Bayeux . After the birth of a second son, the family settled in Vaires-sur-Marne in 1909 where Georges Dayez attended the communal school from 1913 , took refuge for two months in Bayeux in 1914 , in Tinténiac ( Brittany ) In 1918 . In 1919 Georges Dayez obtained his certificate of studies and spent his holidays in Vicq , in the mining country of the north of Valenciennes , with his grandfather, the spectacle of the destruction caused by the war impressively him, then returns to the college of Meaux . In 1924 , after spending the first part of the baccalaureate, he stopped studying to start painting, and studied phototypy and intaglio and lithography in his father's studio. He attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière at Montparnasse and the Julian Academy in Saint - Germain - des - Prés , as well as the evening drawing courses of the City of Paris, which Adam also followed. In 1926 he was accepted as a "free pupil" in the studio of Lucien Simon at the Ecole des Beaux Arts .
