Fluid lines of colour appear to dance across the canvas in this colourful abstract painting –a collaboration between Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak and an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi. Inspired by an Italian sculpture of a mythological creature—the Satyr (a figure caught between human and animal worlds) found by a fisherman in 1998, this expressive piece is rendered in yellow, orange, green, pink, orange and white. “The philosophical artistic formation of one and the literary humanistic of the other, are intertwined in a common vocabulary, a visual language of colour, gesture and form.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Inspired by a famous Italian sculpture, this expressive series of abstract paintings in vivid colours was created by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak in collaboration with an Italian artist. Gestural brushstrokes of bright yellow, green, sky blue, melon white and a touch of pink swirl about the canvas in this dynamic composition. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful figurative sculptures. His collaborator in this series, Italian artist Angela Letizia Renzi is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics.’ “In 1998, a fisherman from Mazara del Vallo brought a bronze sculpture with mutilated arms and legs to the surface: the Satyr, a figure halfway between the human and animal worlds.” Tosczak and Renzi Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. (dan041) This original contemporary abstract work on paper by Deborah Dancy is comprised of black, white, and grey paint, in her signature built up/re-built space that as she says, "operate in a realm in which beauty and tension simultaneously exist without explanation or narrative." Deborah Dancy is an abstract artist. Her paintings and drawings are sensuous provocations beset with marks that guide, then abruptly collide into confrontational slabs of color. There is an atmosphere of complex but urgent tension in her work, as she builds tangential linear demarcations, and abutting shapes, that provoke, entice and disrupt; -taking us everywhere and nowhere. From densely painted forms to more minimally declared images, Dancy’s work operates in the recognition that meanderings, intentional and accidental declarations are best when the beautiful and the disconcerting exist simultaneously. Deborah Dancy was born in Bessemer, Alabama and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She earned BFA from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MS and an MFA from Illinois State University. She is the recipient of John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, a Yaddo Fellow, and a National Endowment of the Arts NEFA award.
