Artist Biography:
Cat Tesla is an internationally recognized contemporary abstract painter whose work is deeply rooted in nature. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1963, Cat developed a passion for both art and science early on. She holds degrees in Biology and Graphic Design, as well as a Master’s Degree in Human Genetics. Cat spent 20 years as a genetic counselor at Emory University in Atlanta before transitioning from genetics to art.
Her artistic journey includes studies with renowned artists Steven Aimone, author of "Expressive Drawing," and Nicholas Wilton, a Sausalito-based artist and teacher. Cat’s work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries across the U.S. and the U.K., including the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Atlanta, and the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art.
With 27 years of professional experience, Tesla's paintings are featured in over 300 corporate collections and nearly 1000 hospitals and medical centers in the U.S., as well as thousands of private collections worldwide. Her work has been highlighted by Imagery Winery in Sonoma, California, on the label of one of their 2023 wines, and profiled in Luxe magazine and Florida Design magazine in 2024. In 2025, her work will be featured in Studio Visit magazine. Recently, her nature-based abstract pieces have been added to the permanent collections of the Emory Winship Cancer Institute, Capital One, and the Shirley Ryan Ability Lab.

“In the mornings, the sky calls to me. I stumble outside to breathe in the day. Cerulean blue and a thousand shades of green greet me as I walk from the house to my studio here in southwest Florida. Geckos dart, birds call, rabbits scurry. These sounds, sights and textures are my beginning. Painting connects me to a time in my youth of endless playing. The excitement of a new day.
I’m an explorer on the canvas. I love building layers using painting and drawing, scraping back, then adding more, and pouring glossy translucent glazes over the surface. My artwork provides the viewer with a bold graphic element from a distance, but up close they’re rewarded with rich organic details and texture. My work draws from the rich palette of the natural world, capturing everything from the colors of the sky to the minutiae beneath our feet. I reimagine these elements, creating new landscapes, new nature scapes that blur the line between reality and abstraction. In my pieces, I play with contrasts—light against shadow, bold hues against muted tones, smooth textures against rough, the angular and the curvilinear. I'm fascinated by the interplay of strength and delicacy in nature and in ourselves, and I strive to reflect this tension in my art.”-Cat Tesla
