Charlotte Andry Gibbs
"MAINE, LIVING THE DREAM" Flag of Maine, White Letters on Bright Blue Ground

2019

About the Item

"MAINE, LIVING THE DREAM" Flag of Maine Oil on Linen 24 x 48 Inches (Plus Artist's Wood Frame) Charlotte Gibbs’ "flag," "stars," and "text" paintings often reference the artist's interest in Pop art and sometimes incorporate 23 karat gold leaf in addition to oil paint, but not always. With its depiction of the bold slogan "MAINE LIVING THE DREAM" in white letters on a bright blue textured ground, "Flag of Maine" is at once lovely and memorable, particularly speaking to those fans of one of New England's most delightful states. Beautifully painted and exquisitely executed, these elegant works of rich color are sophisticated examples of Gibbs' ability to invoke whimsy while demanding serious attention, and the artist's simple white wood frames are the perfect complement . Gibbs is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation, palette, and/or symbols of particular significance to the client. Cate McQuaid, “The Boston Globe,” January 12, 2013: “Gold brightens up the darkest days of the year at Beth Urdang Gallery, and Charlotte Andry Gibbs makes liberal use of it in her paintings. Gibbs focuses on iconography, using gold leaf and paint to re-create flags, corporate logos, and legendary works of art. While crafting a gold American flag, or a Coca-Cola or Chevrolet logo in gold feels like a too obvious jab at capitalism, all the works together draw intriguing formal connections.” Charlotte Andry Gibbs attended Newcomb College and received a BFA in Painting from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1971. She has had numerous one-person exhibitions at the Beth Urdang Gallery and has been included in over 25 group shows, primarily in the New England area where the artist resides. Most recently Gibbs had the distinct honor of being awarded First Prize in the Roddy Compeition held at the Concord Center for Visual Arts, where she was singled out among the 540 submissions by 340 artists by Katherine French, the Director. Charlotte Gibbs’ Pop inspired text paintings are works which perfectly incorporate words and execution, graphically striking just the right notes of whimsy and commentary. Additional series of 'flags.' stars, such iconic cultural symbols as the Coca-Cola logo, and the stark geometric forms often identified with the Bauhaus and Minimalism startle our expectations of such classic imagery with their incongruous execution in the very formal medium she often opts for of 23-karat gold leaf and oil. Consistently to be found in Gibbs’ works is the artist’s keen knowledge of the history of art, her love of referencing it, and a subtle sense of humor all meticulously and crisply executed with rich color and simple white wood frames made by Gibbs that beautifully complement these paintings. The 'flag' series (which can be read as depictions of flags and in some instances pure geometric abstractions) also includes oils that do not incorporate 23 karat gold leaf. The artist is often commissioned to paint variations on her 'flags' and 'stars' to customize scale, orientation, palette, and symbols of particular significance to the client. "Mario SAFE my GUCCI ass" Mixed media Painting 37" x 48" in by John Paul Fauves 2017 Mixed media, acrylic and oil on canvas 37" × 48" inch From GUCCI in Wonderland series GUCCI in Wonderland series contains two parts. First one, GUCCI in wonderland, is an inspiration that came to John Paul Fauves after doing a 10 piece collection of some Alessandro Michele art campaigns. There was so much magic realism in the GUCCI brand and concept that transcended from being a clothing label to something more surreal. It is here when the artist decides to give a hold to his new collection for 2018 named "holy exit" and dive into this new world of colors and wonders. The second part, Alice in Wonderland, represents the artist a world of fantasy and dreams. It seems as if the author Lewis Caroll could write like a dream. The same concept of surrealism is what FAUVES feels about Gucci design and branding. It as if Gucci can design and create form the world of dreams, and this is what the artist wants to represent in his art GUCCI in wonderland. ABOUT John Paul FAUVES: John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica . His artistic journey started at a very young age after he became a student of Joaquin Rodriguez del Paso , one of the most important Costa Rican modern art tutors. John Paul spent 15 years studying and mastering his technique, and only a few years ago he finally started showcasing his work. In his paintings he engages questions of identity as they relate to art history as well as our everyday interactions with mainstream culture and social media. Greatly inspired by modernist masters as wellas pop-artists, Fauves mixes fragments of different iconic images in vivid and colourful compositions. Of his experimental and high eclectic style, he says, “art is an expression from the soul, and the soul is somethinglimitless. This is why I am always searching for different elements to bring into the work.” 2019: Alts Iz farloyrn, Los Angeles, CA Portraits of Someone, London 2018: [ Mi / Me ] solo exhibition at DOPENESS ART LAB, Taipei, Taiwan Arte de La Peer Papi Chulo group exhibition, Krause gallery, NYC Down the Rabbit Hole group exhibition, Imitate London, London, UK ARCO Madrid Art Palm Beach, Miami 2017: Art Basel Miami PIXELS Pre-Basel group exhibition by JM Art Management at Laurent & Martin gallery LA Style Fashion week FACES, group exhibition by JM Art Management at HOMME gallery A Loss of Innocence, solo exhibition Guy Hepner...

"Breaking Good" Pop Art Painting 70 x 54 inch by John Paul Fauves
By John Paul Fauves
Located in Culver City, CA
"Breaking Good" Pop Art Painting 70 x 54 inch by John Paul Fauves From "Alts iz farloyrn" ("All is lost") series 2019 Mixed media, acrylic and oil on canvas 70" × 54" inch "Alts iz farloyrn" ("All is lost") "Alts iz Farloyrn” – the latest series by John Paul Fauves featuring large-scale mixed media paintings, sculptures, and his famous art masks. Inspired by American idols James Dean and Steve McQueen, "Alts iz Farloyrn,” which translates to "All is Lost," was Steve McQueen’s first ever line on stage and represents Fauves own struggle with losing it all yet discovering his true self. “Alts iz Farloyrn” dives deep into the darkness that surrounded James Dean and Steve McQueen and explores their need to live fast. Through this new series, viewers are reminded that although both men overcame challenges to become the Hollywood elite, they struggled to mentally escape their troubled childhood and demons. Recognized internationally for his Neo-Pop Expressionism, Fauves paintings deal with identity through art, mainstream culture and social media. About this series, Fauves says “I have personally lost it all and what I’ve learned is when you lose it all you can win it all again and create a new beginning!” ABOUT John Paul FAUVES: John Paul Fauves (born in 1980) is a contemporary Artist from Costa Rica .
