"In my current work I am involved with various gestural forms along with a variety of abstract language. I am also using the elements and energy of the landscape in some of the paintings which seems to enter into the work in an intuitive way. I live on a farm in Northern California with various livestock and beautiful surroundings.
Breaking up the space differently in the current paintings than in previous works has created greater energy as well as interest for me with a new type of sensibility evolving with more emphasis on simpler more limited forms.
The negative space has become more important in the energy it conveys and its relation to other areas of the painting. In the last 4 years I have done a series called The White Paintings. In this body of works I am problem solving the opposition of the negative spaces to the areas of limited color while trying to achieve high energy in the paintings with emphasis on the quality of the surfaces."

Chris Hayman
American artist Chris Hayman has been painting for several decades. She plays with colors and space in her densely textured, energetic abstract paintings, which are inspired largely by the natural world.
Hayman was born in New York City. She earned her BA in art history at the University of Maryland and went on to earn a second degree in art at the University of Nevada, Reno. It was during her time in Nevada that she ventured into painting.
Hayman focuses on the dimensions of space within a given piece and has cited her interest “how forms are energized by the space around them.” While the artist has found inspiration in the work of painters such as Roland Petersen and Gustavo Rivera, she lives on a farm in Northern California and is surrounded by her livestock and the beauty of the great outdoors. The majesty of nature has long played a significant role in her work.
Hayman was also trained as a classical pianist and has always had a strong creative spirit. She is deeply involved in theater and the performing arts, and her affinity for music strongly informs her art, as is evidenced by the melodic fluidity of her paintings.
Hayman’s work is held in many corporate and private collections. She has exhibited widely, showing her work group and solo shows in galleries all over the United States.

Influenced by artists of such varying styles as Caravaggio, Rembrandt, De Kooning and Jack Levine, as well as many of the German Neo-Expressionists*, Dan Howard's work often blurs the line between representational* and abstract art*. His experimentation with different canvas preparations, his use of intense colors and his expressive brush strokes have created a myriad of visual combinations in his characteristic larger-sized oil paintings. The result is an emphasis on audience participation and the role of individual interpretation. "I want to make the viewer part of the process. That makes for a richer experience," Howard says.
Throughout his career, Howard has been both a dedicated art teacher-administrator and a gifted professional artist. He chaired the departments of art at Arkansas State University, Kansas State University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Howard has received 100 prizes, awards and honors including the top awards in the three longest running national open painting competitions: Society of Four Arts, Palm Beach, Fla.; Butler Institute, Youngstown, Ohio; and Chautauqua Institution, New York.
