About the Item

Curated circles in pale green, gold, black and toned maroon are precisely and contemplatively arranged on a light dove grey ground. The areas between the shapes in this square minimalist acrylic painting on plexiglass are filled with silver and custard yellow. This work comes framed. Framed dimensions approximately 23 x 23 inches. Cantine's work is a poetic and intellectual exploration of a pictorial problem, color as structure which has infinite variations. Cantine was quoted in the Alberta Biennial of Contemporary Art 2000: "For the past 26 years, I have painted essentially the same still life, which began as a pair of apples and its shadow, and evolved under pressure of color into the present imagery." Cantine may be referred to as a post-minimalist, a term coined by Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971 to describe work with a minimalist tendency but that uses modest materials and aims towards a pure formalist aesthetic. David Cantine is a senior Canadian painter who has been exploring the still life for many years. Cantine was born in Jackson, Michigan (1939) and studied at the University of Iowa (BFA, MA) before moving to Alberta and working as a professor in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta (1965 – 96). His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Alberta, FAB Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art among others and is represented in numerous private and public collections.

EQUIVALENCE 104- Acrylic and Tint on cut Linen- Green, Red Abstract Geometric
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting on cut linen canvas by Linda King Ferguson is primarily color blocked into three sections. The leftmost rectangular section is a bright green color, and the rightmost section is a wine red. These two sections are separated by a golden yellow/orange line, that has been cut in a teardrop shape, peeling back from the mother canvas to reveal that the back of the canvas has been painted pink. Her Equivalence Series began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting...
