About the Item
"Vulcana" is a framed acrylic painting on panel by David Rothermel, featuring blocks of color in black, brown, and red. The seemingly simplistic swaths of color are rendered more complex by the dynamic underpainting as the expressive brushstrokes and playful drips add a rich sense of movement.
This piece is finished in a silver floater frame with a black woodgrain finish along the frame's sides and interior. Pricing includes the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 47.75 x 36 inches.
American artist, David Rothermel of David Rothermel Contemporary, Santa Fe, New Mexico, was born in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, a small town located at the confluence of the north and west branches of the Susquehanna River. David first studied art at York Academy of Art, located in York, PA. He later went on to study and graduate from the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of Art. Two of his summers were spent in Maine at the much coveted Skowhegan School of Painting, studying under preëminent American masters.
Along with many student awards, scholarships and accolades, David has remained steadfast in his professional career.
When David moved to New Mexico in 1981, he first took a job as an art director for an outdoor advertising company. His days were spent painting 10’ X 40’ billboards. His yearning for painting on a large scale was fulfilled until he fell from the scaffolds and broke both arms.
Among the many solo gallery and museum exhibitions, David’s works are represented in galleries in Santa Fe, Scottsdale, Aspen and Washington, DC. His works are included in many private and public collections. Two of his watercolors are part of nationally recognized permanent collection of the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine.
David currently lives in Santa Fe and Scottsdale.

"Poemes CXXXVIII" Contemporary Abstract Embroidered Mixed Media on Canvas
By Raul de la Torre
Located in Baltimore, MD
"Poemes CXXXVIII" is a framed mixed media work on canvas by Raul de la Torre, with layers of contrasting abstract shapes and colors. De la Torre's signature technique of painstakingly embroidering meticulously-matched asymmetric forms over smooth layers of paint adds texture and delight to each of his pieces.
This piece is finished in a silver floater frame with subtle beveling and a dark brown (nearly black) woodgrain effect along the frame’s interior and sides. Pricing includes the pictured frame. Unframed dimensions are 30 x 60 inches.
Spanish artist Raul De La Torre creates vibrant abstract mixed media artworks that focus primarily on the color and the material.
"Many painters create texture upon their canvases by building layer upon layer of paint; with each layer comes a greater sense of history and dimension within the work. Others using thickening agents to almost sculpt their paint, spreading it thickly upon their work’s surface for a subtle 3D effect. I have chosen a unique route to enrich my acrylic paintings with texture: embroidery.
I first choose the colors I want to incorporate in the palette of the work I’m about to embark upon. To me, the colors represent people, moments or feelings.
I paint with acrylic in various blocks of color interacting with one another, evolving a pattern upon the canvas. Sometimes I contain the paint within a clean border, other times I let the blocks of color drip down the canvas or paper. Next, I begin the process of embroidery. I make horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using cotton thread.
This process of embroidering on canvas or paper adds both intrigue and a sense of depth to each unique work. My most recent body of works reflects a series of poems by a well known poet from Catalonia, my home country. An homage to both the poet and the creative process, my technique of embroidery is heartfelt exploration. Just as a poet builds words to form metaphor or meaning, I build texture through embroidery to form depth and character."
POEMES Series
The starting point and inspiration of Poèmes is a series of verses from the Catalan poet Miquel Marti i Pol - poems that reflect loss but not always sadness.
The color is used as a code to represent times, places, and people left behind. Some of them are embroidered forever in our memory, turning to form part of our DNA. To represent the firmness and strength of that past, the cotton is mixed with the paint in the works to form a unity.
"For the series POEMES, I have been using different poets as inspiration. The initial inspiration for the first works were poems by one of my favorite poets, Miquel Marti i Pol. Other favorites are Benjamin Fondane, Seamus Heaney...

Black form surfaces on red painterly ground / - The Double Origin of Painting -
Located in Berlin, DE
Jürgen Möbius (*1939 Großenhain), Black form surfaces on red painterly ground. Oil on hardboard, 50 x 60 cm, 51 x 61 cm (frame), signed "Möbius" and dated "[19]81".
- Small paint chip in upper right corner, otherwise good condition. Gallery frame with slight signs of wear.
- The Double Origin of Painting -
About the artwork
In the painting black, optically dominant forms can be seen, which in their arrangement at right angles to each other have a proto-architectural character. They are, so to speak, always already given original forms. At the same time, however, the forms are surfaces of color, and thus genuine painting. In order to make the painterly character of the painting clearly visible, Jürgen Möbius has applied red-toned strokes that have preserved the brushstroke. These are traces of an act of painting.
The diagonal layers of red strokes merge into the upper white area, which oscillates between brushwork and homogeneous flatness, while the central white field, into which a black bar protrudes, has a decidedly planar character.
The sharp contrast between the autonomous black surface forms, reminiscent of Kasimir Malevich, and the free brushstroke, which is not bound to any motif, creates an enormous pictorial tension, which is conveyed by the white, but at the same time is intensified by the virulent black-and-white contrast.
In addition to the tense contrast of form and color, there is also a contrast between the dynamic of the brushstroke and the static of the black surface forms, whereby the diagonal alignment of these forms also gives the static a dynamic, while at the same time the layered brushstrokes have something static about them.
Added to this structure of tension is the fact that the painting ground, the unprepared hardboard, is clearly present as such in the picture. In this way, it becomes clear once again that we are not dealing with an autonomous cosmos of form and color, as in Suprematism, but with a painting created by the artist's hand.
With this work, Jürgen Möbius explores the possibilities of painting and thematizes painting in terms of its twofold origin, the trace of the guided brush and the painterly form, which gains its independence precisely by absorbing the brushstroke into itself.
About the artist
From 1959 to 1965 Jürgen Möbius studied painting at the University Institute for Art and Work Education in Mainz. He also studied philosophy and art history at the University of Mainz. Afterwards he worked as a freelance artist in Mainz.
At first, Möbius created material reliefs and installations, then, around 1974, he turned increasingly to conceptual art and added cinematic means. During this phase he wrote the manifesto-like essay "Principles of Supranatural Landscape" (1979).
From 1981 on, Möbius concentrated on painting and searched for artistic ways to "treat intellectual and sensual perception equally in the fusion of representational and abstract pictorial elements" (Wolfgang Zemter). He found inspiration on his study trips to Thailand and Sri Lanka.
"The pure painting of Jürgen Möbius flows through us as a timeless expression of memory and energy, ploughing our perception and bringing us the happiness of seeing authentic, immovable form.
