About the Item

This contemporary abstract painting by David Sorensen explores a bright yellow palette. David Sorensen was drawn to the rich and vibrant colours of Mexico. Celebrated as an important Canadian artist, Sorensen’s profoundly beautiful colour field paintings reflected his vision of the light and colour he experienced there. This expressive golden yellow oil painting Is one of a series that represents the culture of the pre-Columbian era. It features detailed markings throughout the canvas and is bordered in a deep purple. Sorensen said Post-modern art often borrowed from different cultures but offered a new way of looking at ancient things. “I think the abstract allows you to simplify and be more direct and reach on a deeper level if it works.” David Sorensen “He is able to show us the essence of the light…so we don’t look at the landscape, we look at the pure light as it is moving and transforming before our eyes on the canvas.” Laurier Lacroix, Quebec Professor of Art History David Sorensen was born in Vancouver and (1937-2011) studied at UBC and the Vancouver School of Art. His teachers were renowned—Arthur Erikson, Bill Reid, and Jack Shadbolt. After moving to Montreal, he taught art at the Montreal School of Art, the Saidye Bronfman Centr,e and Bishop’s University for almost 20 years. Sorensen, a member of the RCA exhibited all over the world. His work is held in numerous private, corporate, and public collections.

Havana No 4, Yellow - bold, bright, colorful, abstract, modernist, oil on canvas
By David Sorensen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
A vibrant culture is captured in colour and dynamic form in this lively abstract painting by David Sorensen. After visiting Cuba in 1999, the Canadian artist created a series of paintings. The light, the bright colours and the rich atmosphere of life in Havana inspired Sorensen’s colour palette—a brilliant square of yellow in the center, surrounded by graphic shapes in red, orange, lime green, blue and black. Lines of blue and black create a grid-like pattern that runs both horizontally and vertically across the canvas. “Through the medium of his art, a bridge is built between inner sensation and outer world experience, illusion and reality, what we cannot see and what we see, life and afterlife.” John K. Grande, Montreal poet and writer Born in Vancouver Sorensen (1937-2011) studied at UBC and the Vancouver School of Art. His teachers were renowned—Arthur Erikson...

AWH 282 - Original Abstract Expressionist Bright Yellow Colorfield Oil Painting
By Bernhard Zimmer
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Bernhard Zimmer produces deeply layered, subtly textured abstract paintings that contain diametrically opposed elements—order and chaos, abstraction and representation, boldness and subtlety—in exquisite tension. Working with oil and mixed media on canvas, he paints in color fields of soft shapes and delicate lines. Grids of diaphanous faces and blocks of illegible text emerge in rich washes of color. Like reliefs, his compositions are built up from numerous layers of material and mark-making. Their surfaces shift with the light and the changing position of the viewer. Full of strength and fragility, Zimmer’s works reward patient viewing, revealing their rich visual nuances to those who take time to delve into their layers. This 43 inch high by 35 inch wide original artwork is created with many layers of mixed media and oil on canvas. This painting is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted as a continuation of the front. It does not require framing. It is signed by the artist on the back of the artwork. Free local Los Angeles area delivery. Affordable Continental U.S. and worldwide shipping available. A certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery is included. Whether figurative or abstract, Zimmer’s artworks inherently alter the feeling of a space. One is absorbed in contemplation as perfectly layered colors and etched hieroglyphic text vibrate from within. Zimmer’s work oscillates between the Geometric Abstraction of Josef Albers and the sublimely layered color fields of Mark Rothko; with added figures that seem to be composed of shadows. This tension between form, color, and text creates canvases with glowing compositions that reverberate with emotion. Bernhard Zimmer was born in 1957 in Stuttgart, Germany. From 1978 to 1984, he completed his education in Cultural Studies at Hildesheim. Zimmer continues to live and work in Cologne. He has exhibited in Hanover, Munich, Dusseldorf, Basel, Gent, Hong Kong, and Singapore to name a few. Zimmer has created a positive stir at major international art fairs such as Art Basel and Kunst Köln. His mysterious compositions pique the taste of the serious art collector. Artspace Warehouse has been representing and exhibiting Bernhard Zimmer's original artworks since 2010. The gallery has been a 1stdibs partner since 2014 with consistently excellent reviews from clients worldwide.
