From the artist's estate of works
Black Center is a striking and impactful large-format painting created in the 1960s by Domenick Capobianco. The work is part of a catalog of bold, post-modernist pieces by the artist that often feature geometric themes — circles, squares, and vibrant color fields. Capobianco is recognized for his use of bright, eye-catching colors and a visual style rooted in Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. During this era, many artists sought to move beyond representational art, favoring bold geometric shapes and vibrant color fields as a way to evoke direct emotional responses rather than depict reality. Capobianco, active in post-war New York, was immersed in this culture of experimentation and innovation. His pieces are known for their strong compositional structure and energetic presentation, with Circles embodying these qualities through its expansive canvas and focus on simple, pure geometric forms.
Domenick Capobianco is celebrated for his contributions to post-war American art. He moved from Italy to the United States and became a prominent figure in the New York art scene, producing a substantial body of work over several decades. His career includes painting, sculpture, and mixed media, with frequent exhibitions worldwide from the late 1950s onward. He has won significant recognition, including the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts, and his works have been featured in auction houses, galleries, and museum collections.
