About the Item

Donald Hamilton Fraser (Scottish, 1929–2009) Abstracted Landscape Oil on canvas Signed with initials ‘DHF’ (lower left) 24 x 20 in. (61 x 51 cm) This striking canvas by Donald Hamilton Fraser presents a landscape distilled into bold shapes and rich textures, with his characteristic fusion of abstraction and suggestion of place. The layered paint surface creates depth and atmosphere, evoking a sense of terrain and shifting light while maintaining a modernist restraint. Fraser’s works are celebrated for their ability to hover between figuration and abstraction, offering a poetic interpretation of the natural world. Born in London to Scottish parents, Fraser trained at St. Martin’s School of Art before receiving a French Government Scholarship to study in Paris. He exhibited widely throughout his career, with solo shows in London, New York, and Tokyo, and became known internationally for his distinctive landscapes. His work is represented in major public collections, including the Tate, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Arts Council of Great Britain. In addition to his practice as a painter, Fraser was a respected teacher, serving as a senior lecturer at the Royal College of Art, where he influenced a generation of younger artists. His paintings, with their bold simplifications and strong colour harmonies, reflect both his formal discipline and his lyrical response to landscape. Abstracted Landscape is a fine example of Fraser’s mature style, demonstrating his ability to transform natural motifs into compositions of striking clarity and enduring beauty. This work is recently represented in a hand finished silvered wood frame with cream slip.

Mid 20th Century Cornish Abstract gouache painting by William Black 'Landscape'
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
William Black (British, Fl. 1963 – 69) Landscape abstraction Watercolour and ink on paper Signed, inscribed and dated ‘Landscape abstraction William Black 63’ (lower edge) 8 x 11.1/4 in. (20.3 x 28.3 cm.) William Black is a little known and underrated member of the St Ives artist group who, having worked as an architect after the Second World War, went on to work as an artist following the inheritance of money in the early 1950s. He was a self taught artist, producing numerous deconstructivist sculptures in the 1960s. He moved to St Ives in Cornwall where he knew artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo. There is a clear architectural element to the sculptures that he made . They illustrate an assemblage of fragmented shapes and forms of a deconstructivist nature. William Black’s artwork is very much rooted in the time and Cornish School so one can see elements from those such as Wilhelmina Barns Graham...
