Dorothy Hood
Space Signals

1970-1979

About the Item

"Space Signals" is an oil on canvas painting by Dorothy Hood, made in the 1970s. The artwork size is 89 3/4 x 70 inches. When Dorothy Hood returned to Houston in 1962, to her delight, NASA made a momentous announcement: the new Spacecraft Center would be in Houston. The idea of space travel resonated with her long-standing interest in cosmology, and the heroic aspiration to achieve a landing on the moon opened something up in the artist. This new frontier informed her work and encouraged her to work bigger. She admitted, "The discovery of what I could do with (large canvases) is the most important thing that ever happened in my painting life." As much as Space Signals is a tour de force of color field painting, her visual language came from other sources: periodical images of spacecraft probes, astronomical objects, and her many conversations with scientists and astronauts who fired her imagination. She created these ravishingly beautiful, thinly painted zones of vaporous phthalo blue hues on the wings of that inspiration. • Patriots Throne
    By Larry Bell
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Patriots Throne" is a painting by Larry Bell. The painting is signed verso, "L Bell '89". Throughout his career Larry Bell has made investigations into the properties of light on surface. By experimenting with the nature of surface and its relationship to space, Bell has devised a methodology characterised by spontaneity, intuition and improvisation. Bell began his career in 1959 and his earliest works consisted of abstract, monochrome paintings on paper and shaped canvases whose outlines corresponded to the silhouette of a box drawn in isometric projection. Panes of glass and then mirrors were substituted for parts of the painted design and this exploration of spatial ambiguity eventually evolved into sculptural constructions made of wood and glass. These works represent the genesis of Bell’s later...

  • Untitled
    By David Smith
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
"Untitled" is a painting by American artist David Smith. David Smith’s paintings from the 1930s rarely come to market, and when Untitled (Billiard Players) surfaced at a Christie’s auction in 2018, it created quite a stir, realizing an impressive price of $1.15 million. Painted around the same time, Untitled shares many similarities with Untitled (Billiard Players). Both paintings affirm Smith’s place among the American artists when ideas and style began to intermingle and coalesce around Picasso’s innovations. Uniquely positioned in temperament and ability, Smith was a man of considerable ambition whose direct-metal configurations would have much to do with achieving new ideas about abstraction. Yet all along, he insisted he was a painter, not a sculptor who painted. Paintings by Smith...
