About the Item

"My new body of work uses discarded wood gathered from landfills and construction sites in Vermont. Once in the studio I prepare the boards by cutting them into thin strips taking care to preserve the patinas of the weathered surfaces. I attach the strips to panels with a series of fine wire nails laid along delicate grid like pencil lines; the result being works that contain aspects of sculpture, drawing and painting referencing many of my interests from quilting to architecture." Johnson received his BFA from the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. He has been awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Artist Grant. His work has been exhibited in a number of galleries and regional museums including: Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville, FL; Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, NY; American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York, NY; and Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Huntsville, TX.

Composition on Blue Background
By Edgar Stoëbel
Located in London, GB
'Composition on Blue Background', oil on board (circa 1960s), by Edgar Stoëbel (1909-2001). In his inimitable style, artist Stoëbel's abstract image with blue background is a lively and colourful modernist work. The image has a pop art quality to it and was created just as that movement was emerging. Pop art challenged traditional painting by embracing colourful images from advertising, popular culture, comic books and mundane objects from everyday life. This artwork has a powerful intensity of tone and colour which speaks to Stoëbel's very distinctive style but remains completely approachable and appealing. In fact, this is not pop art. This is part of the post-war concrete abstract movement, or Constructive Art...
