About the Artist: Eduardo Arcenio Chavez was born in Wagonmound, New Mexico, in 1917, and became a prominent American artist, working as an illustrator, muralist, landscape painter, sculptor, and lithographer. Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he was mentored by notable artists including Boardman Robinson, Frank Mechau, Arnold Blanch, and Peppino Mangravite. Before serving in World War II, Chavez created murals throughout the Western United States. After his service in the army, Chavez settled in Woodstock, New York, with his wife and fellow artist, Jenne Magafan. This period marked a vibrant and dynamic artistic climate, with many Western and Midwestern artists migrating to Woodstock, including Bruce Currie, Fletcher Martin, Edward Millman, and Mitchell Siporin. He taught at the Art Students League, Colorado College, and Syracuse University, shaping the next generation of artists. His works were exhibited at renowned institutions such as the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art, and Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, among others. Chavez's legacy lives on in public collections at institutions like the Library of Congress, MoMA, Detroit Museum of Art, Butler Institute of American Art, and the Roswell Museum of Art. His WPA murals can be found in places like West High School (Denver), the U.S. Post Offices in Center, TX, Geneva, NE, and Glenwood Springs, CO. Chavez's bold, expressive works continue to captivate collectors and art enthusiasts, and this "Florentine Night" painting is a prime example of his mastery in color, form, and composition.
