About the Item
Florentine Night is a striking circa 1951 abstract oil painting by acclaimed American artist Edward (Eduardo) Arcenio Chavez (1917–1995). Signed and titled by Chavez on the back of the canvas, this dynamic composition bursts with vivid colors—bright blues, purples, greens, yellows, and oranges—that evoke energy and movement. Measuring 24 x 30 inches (image) and framed in the original artist’s frame (28 x 33 inches overall), the work exemplifies Chavez’s expressive mid-century abstract style and mastery of bold color and form.
Born in New Mexico, Chavez studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and gained recognition as a muralist, illustrator, and lithographer. After serving in World War II, he joined the thriving Woodstock, New York art scene, where he created influential works alongside peers like Jenne Magafan. Awarded the Tiffany Grant, Fulbright Award, and Childe Hassam Award, Chavez taught at prestigious institutions and exhibited widely, including at MoMA and the National Academy of Design.
His legacy endures through vibrant public collections and WPA murals across the U.S. Florentine Night is a captivating example of Chavez’s bold vision, perfect for collectors of mid-century modern and abstract American art.
