About the Item

Discover "A Small City Park", a striking mid-century modern abstract painting by renowned Denver artist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). This original acrylic and watercolor on paper showcases an earth-toned composition inspired by City Park in Denver, Colorado, a place the artist often visited. The artwork is divided into four quadrants, each separated by brown and white striped borders, featuring uniquely shaped ponds. Framed with archival materials, the piece measures 21 ¾ x 18 ¾ inches (outer dimensions), while the image itself is 12 x 15 inches. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak. About the Artist – Edward Marecak (1919-1993) Born to Slovakian immigrant parents, Edward Marecak grew up surrounded by Slavic folklore, which later deeply influenced his artistic style. His journey into art began with painting Cézanne-inspired watercolors as a teenager, leading to a scholarship at the Cleveland Institute of Art (1938-1942). He later studied at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art before serving in World War II. After the war, Marecak pursued further studies at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, where he met his wife, artist Donna Fortin. He established himself in Denver, teaching art for 25 years while developing a unique style blending surrealism, folk influences, and vibrant color palettes. Marecak’s work is characterized by intricate compositions, dynamic colors, and storytelling elements drawn from mythology, folklore, and music. Unlike many Colorado artists, he did not focus on Western landscapes but instead infused his pieces with symbolic imagery and abstract narratives. His work remains a significant contribution to mid-century modern art, blending European traditions, folk influences, and contemporary abstraction. Interested in collecting a piece of mid-century modern history? This beautifully framed painting is a rare find from one of Denver’s most distinctive artists.

Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing
By Jean Xceron
Located in New York, NY
Abstract Work on Paper Mid-Century Modernism Greek American Gouache Drawing. A modernist artist who emigrated to America from Greece in 1904, when he was fourteen years old, Jean Xceron is described as having a reputation as an artist that has mysteriously fallen into obscurity---especially since he was reportedly quite prominent during his lifetime. However, a partial explanation of that omission is the fact that many of his papers and early records have been lost. He was a painter of biomorphic abstractions and did collages, which were influenced by Dadaism. Xceron was active in New York City when modernism was gaining influence. Of him during this period, it was written that his artistic role was "a vital link between what is commonly termed as the first-generation (the Stieglitz group, the Synchromists, etc.) and second-generation, the American Abstract Artists, the Transcendental Painting...
