About the Item

This 1980s oil on board painting, titled "Masks", was created by renowned Colorado artist Edward Marecak (1919-1993). The piece features a striking mosaic-style composition with bold and vibrant colors—including red, blue, green, yellow, and orange. The dynamic interplay of these hues creates a visually arresting abstract piece that brings a sense of energy and movement to any space. Presented in a custom black frame, the artwork measures 39 ¼ x 22 ⅜ x 1 ⅞ inches (framed), with the image itself measuring 37 x 20 inches. This captivating piece is a beautiful example of Marecak’s mastery in blending abstract expressionism with a vivid, colorful palette. Provenance: Estate of the artist, Edward Marecak About the Artist: Edward Marecak Born in 1919 to immigrant parents from Slovakia, Edward Marecak grew up in a multi-ethnic neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio, where his childhood was steeped in Slavic folk tales and traditions—influences that would leave a lasting imprint on his art. As a young boy, Marecak painted scenery for school puppet shows, which sparked his lifelong interest in art. His early studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and later at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center helped shape his distinctive style. Marecak was an innovative and versatile artist, proficient in mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, and gouache, and he created works that ranged from surrealism to abstract expressionism. His paintings often reflected a deep connection to his Slovakian roots and an exploration of mythology, folk tales, and dream-like symbolism. In the 1940s, after serving in the military during World War II, Marecak returned to art studies, eventually becoming a prominent figure in Colorado’s art scene. His style evolved over time, moving away from traditional subject matter toward abstract, richly detailed pieces that explored color, pattern, and form. He was particularly inspired by Greek mythology, classical music, and Slavic legends. Though Marecak was relatively quiet about his exhibitions, he had notable one-person shows and was included in major collections, including the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Denver Art Museum, and the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art.
