About the Item
Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen’s Cut Work series is a free hand paper cutting process that charts the contours of our ever-changing emotional experience through the movement of form, line, and color.
Using free hand scalpel-cut multilayered imagery, the dimensional layers move with vibration. There are no guides, rules, drawings or plans in the process.
Imperfection is perfection. Using bold gestural cutting to convey the intensity and complexity of our inner lives to engage with the emotion and imagination of the viewer.
Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen grew up in Chicago. Her mother and grandmother were artists, introducing Elizabeth to visual thinking. She attended Parsons School of Design in NYC, receiving a BFA in Fashion Design. In her design work she discovered a language of movement in the human condition, leading to the development of imagery in drawings and cut paper. Elizabeth began exhibiting her Cut Work series in 2008. In 2018 she had a solo retrospective show at Howl Gallery in NYC and continues to exhibit her work. Elizabeth currently resides in New York City.

Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen
Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen grew up in Chicago. There, the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright inspired her to experiment with 3-dimensional design using natural light and shadow. Elizabeth came to New York City in 1985 to study Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. After graduating in 1989, she went on to work at top design houses. Her work has appeared in major fashion magazine editorials including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and InStyle. She currently resides in New York City with her husband Bob Gruen. CUT WORK Cut Work is an evolving examination of emotion, using original imagery created in a free, hand cut action technique employing a surgeon's scalpel. A clear mind and a steady hand guide Elizabeth Gregory-Gruen in her exploration into shadow and light. Each image is initiated in the top layer of paper. An adhesive is added and another layer of paper; this layer is cut and the process continues, until a total reverse relief is created. The organic images, defined in the numerous layers of paper, capture light and create shadows changing with each moment.

This earlier (1966) sculpture of the same title is the inspiration of the portfolio. The sculpture is in the collection of the Albright Knox Museum. The screenprints follow the neon of the sculpture.
Greek-born American sculptor Chryssa—who went by her first name professionally—died on December 23, 2013, reports Margalit Fox of the New York Times. Born in 1933 in Athens, Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali grew up during the Nazi occupation of Greece. After studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris, and the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, she began incorporating neon into her fragmentary, text-based work. Her first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1961, which was quickly followed by shows at the Guggenheim, New York; Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Her work is part of collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
