George F. Welch
Abstract Judaica Enamel Mounted Wall Panel Plaque Artwork by George Welch

circa 1950

About the Item

George F. Welch (1926 - 2003) designed this lovely Mid-Century modernist enamel on copper artwork. The large square enameled plaque is wall-mounted and framed. The artwork boasts an Abstract and Brutalist design with Hebrew fonts and numbers on the top. The plaque has an inscribed Welch signature toward the bottom right corner. An original paper label providing the artist's statement is at the back under the protection paper. Please note the circular dents visible on both bottom angles seem intentional by the artist (please read the biography for an explanation). This piece is framed in a contemporary style using metallic wood, brushed, silvered, and complimented with an almond green and off-white matte. Measurements: Frame size: 23 in wide (58.5 cm) x 23 in high (58.5 cm) Plaque size: 16 in wide (40.5 cm) x 16 in high (40.5 cm). Note: George F. Welch 1926-2003 Welch said he became interested in enameling after taking a jewelry-making course at University College in the 1950s. He stated, "Enamel is often used to enhance jewelry pieces by adding color, so I decided to try it with larger metal pieces." A native of New Briton, Connecticut, Welch came to Syracuse after graduating from the School of the Worcester (Mass.) Art Museum, the Hartford Art School, and four years as a Marine Corps artist. As an artist, he finds his work rewarding. Creating enamel is my greatest pleasure, he says. He goes on to explain that the uniqueness of the process is exciting, and it just cannot be found in painting. He explains that the method involves applying enamels tinted by oxides to a metal surface. Usually, I use copper, but silver, aluminum, gold, or stainless steel are other options. The enamels, done by George F. Welch, are abstract works on copper, framed for hanging. Welch was a full-time artist who painted and sculpted, considering his enamels a Fine Arts medium. He worked on flat copper, firing it repeatedly for desired effects and experimenting with oxides and tones. According to him, his first idea is only partially realized, but as the project develops, the design is strengthened by the addition of colors and textures. When finished, he gives it a title, usually on a nature theme, which allows people to relate to it. His enamel works are striking. The textures, colors, and design almost jump from the wall. Welch has a bold, direct style of handling the medium, using color with three-dimensional effects. The designs are impressive, sometimes accentuated by bending the flat copper or hammering three circular bumps. Additionally, some external components are incorporated, like thumbtacks, which produce a lovely spatial structure. The textures and colors have an emotional substance: they reach out to the viewer. Welch used the enameling media with impressive results. (Credit: "Ceramics, Enamels Exhibit Opens," published on March 7, 1975, in The Utica Daily Press.) (Ambiance pictures might not have the exact actual size of the painting).

Abstract Expressionist Enamel on Metal Color Field Painting Paul Jenkins Style
By Dom Mingolla

Wall hanging, Framed 16 X 20. Enamel measures 16 X 12 Dominic Mingolla (1922 – 1999) Mingolla created paintings in many different materials and genres. Best known for his large abstract expressionist watercolor paintings similar in style to Paul Jenkins and for his Enamel work. His work bears affinities both to Lyrical Abstraction and to Tachisme artists such as Nicolas de Staël, Serge Poliakoff, Andre Lanskoy, Hans Hartung, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Gustave Singier, Alfred Manessier, Roger Bissiere, "Lyrical Abstraction arose in the 1960s and 70s, following the challenge of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Many artists began moving away from geometric, hard-edge, and minimal styles, toward more lyrical, sensuous, romantic abstractions worked in a loose gestural style. These "lyrical abstractionists" sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting, and to revive and reinvigorate a painterly 'tradition' in American art. At the same time, these artists sought to reinstate the primacy of line and color as formal elements in works composed according to aesthetic principles – rather than as the visual representation of sociopolitical realities or philosophical theories." "Characterized by intuitive and loose paint handling, spontaneous expression, illusionist space, acrylic staining, process, occasional imagery, and other painterly techniques, the abstract works included in this exhibition sing with rich fluid color and quiet energy. Artists associated with Lyrical Abstraction include: Natvar Bhavsar, Lamar Briggs, Friedel Dzubas, Sam Francis, Ronnie Landfield, Pat Lipsky...

LENTICULAR VANISH - textural optical illusion painting using caulk and enamel
By Eleanor Aldrich
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
Excerpt from a review by art critic Joe Nolan: "In these works, Aldrich paints on surfaces that have been covered in uniform vertical strips of caulk. The textures don’t play into the subjects of these paintings so much as create a consistent 3D pattern across the whole surface of a wood panel covered with canvas. Two of the most interesting works in this style give us graphic renderings of domestic interiors laid out in blocks of color and elemental shapes. 'Kitchen Sink' and 'Ironing' depict counters, faucets and ironing boards through a distorted perspective that’s unnervingly deep and narrow, vertiginous and claustrophobic. The caulk brings lots of texture to these works, and Aldrich’s paint appears to be applied in chromatic washes of yellow, pink and blue that seem serene given their off-kilter surroundings. In fact, Aldrich uses the repeating vertical textures to create vividly colored lenticular illusions in these works, which only reveal themselves as viewers move past the paintings. In addition to their formal qualities and their narrative content, Aldrich’s works also comment on traditional gender roles in Western society. Her narrative portraits are mostly inspired by the covers of Nancy Drew novels. Drew, the “girl detective” who first appeared in print as a female counterpart to the Hardy Boys...
