About the Item
Inspired by drawings made by children, Hiltner has created a chaotic narrative of surreal figures and animals drawn in red acrylic across an expanse of raw canvas in this over 6 feet wide painting. A central palm tree in red outline with black leaves divides the pyramidal composition that is completed with select sections painted in with red, turquoise, white and periwinkle. The sky is brushed, bright yellow. This work is aptly titled referring to a series of protests that occurred in the Middle East and North Africa that began in 2010 and became known as the Arab Spring.
Gregor Hiltner (b. 1950, Nu¨rnberg) studied from 1970-1978 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Karl Fred Dahmen, as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg as a master student of Ernst Weil.
Hiltner undertook study trips including a fourteen-month stay in the Middle East (Syria, Jordan, Israel). In 1979, he spent six months in Polynesia and Micronesia, and in 1980/81, with a scholarship of the German Academic Exchange service (DAAD), he went to London, Brazil, Tuscany, Canada, as well as in the United States.
In addition to his worldwide exhibitions, Hiltner has also produced public commissions, the design for the Metro station Rathenauplatz, and in 1996 the longest image of of Germany (220 × 2 metres) in the EuromedClinic, Furth.

A Country Like You (Le Pays Qui te Ressemble) - abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
This lyrical, colourful abstract painting is by Canadian visual artist Richard Tosczak- one in a series created in collaboration with an Italian artist, Angela Letizia Renzi, a lover of literature and linguistics. In this dynamic composition, expressive, gestural lines and swaths of colour—yellow, green, turquoise, white, melon and brown flow across the canvas. Tosczak is perhaps best known for his beautiful bronze figurative sculptures. This painting was inspired by a poem entitled ‘L’invitation au voyage” written by C. Baudelaire, a famous French poet.
‘Au pays qui te ressemble’ means ‘the country that resembles you’.
“The collaboration, which has its beginnings in the picturesque setting of Lake Como, continues, more productive than ever, on an island in the heart of the Mediterranean animated by the tide, the motion of the waves, the active volcano Etna and tales of local mythology.” Tosczak and Renzi
Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
