About the Item

Permanescence TN830-D is a unique ink and acrylic on canvas diptych painting by Japanese contemporary artist Hachiro Kanno, dimensions are 100 × 140 cm (39.4 × 55.2 in). This diptych consists of two panels, each measuring 100 x 70 cm (39.4 x 27.6 in). The artwork is signed, sold unframed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This abstract work is inspired by Japanese calligraphy. Created with ink and acrylic in black, white, and blue, the brushstrokes are expressive—both forceful and refined—and clearly reveal the artist’s gestures. The vibrant blue contrasts with the dark background, bringing a strong sense of energy to the piece. Coming from a family of traditional calligraphers, Hachiro Kanno blends Eastern heritage with Western influences. He explores the expressive potential of calligraphy, turning it into abstract composition—“a writing that has become a painting.” His lines range from supple and fluid to tense and restrained, capturing both speed and stillness. With a limited color palette, he plays with contrasts: painted forms and empty space, shadow and light. Hachiro Kanno arrived in France in 1968 to complete his studies at the Paris School of Fine Arts. In 1979, he moved into the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre and has been there ever since. Coming from a long line of traditional calligraphers and raised in the Shinto religion, Kanno transposes timeless themes into abstract, in a more up-to-date and universal way organized around the positive and the negative.
