Untitled Minimalist Sculptural painting

1970's

About the Item

Beautiful abstract painting by American artist, Harris Strong (1920-2006). Acrylic and pins on folded handmade paper, 1970's. Measures 30 x 40 inches framed. Weighs 22 lbs. Color of piece is an iridescent pearl blue gray. Titled and signed in pencil, lower margins. No damage or conservation. Harris Strong label affixed en verso. Biography: Harris Strong was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1920. His aunt owned a greeting card company, and that influenced him to become an artist. He also had a strong scientific bent, so he was meticulous about the "engineering" of his tiles, which featured many innovations when competitors were creating "pie plates," in his own dismissive works. During the war, he was a cryptographer, working directly under General Douglas MacArthur during World War II. Afterward, he studied ceramics* and the chemistry of ceramic glazes at North Carolina State University. Then he worked in Brooklyn, New York at Kelby Pottery. Later his own business really took off. He had showrooms in Chicago, New York and Tokyo… he created a 30' long free-standing ceramic tile mural for the Waldorf-Astoria in York City, which remains in place. One friend says he was the first to ever show art at a home furnishings show. He loved, and sang Gilbert & Sullivan, collected stamps, and played bridge. In 1970, Strong relocated to Trenton, Maine, but after a fire destroyed his glazes developed over 20 years, he shifted his focus to prints, serigraphs*, woodcuts*, etchings*, engravings*, collage* and paintings. Strong died in 2006.

Duino Elegies

Located in Wilton Manors, FL
Richard Mann (1940-1990). Duino Elegies, 1981. Mixed media on rag paper, consisting of 10 sheets, corresponding to the 10 elegies, each measuring 14.5 x 23 inches. Please request additional images depicting alternate formats or videos. Biography: Playwright, poet and visual artist, Rev. Richard Mann was born and educated in Melbourne Australia. At the height of America's counter-cultural revolution, Mann moved to New York City where he lived and worked in Harlem. He was influenced by surrealism, abstract expressionism, and calligraphy at the time of his arrival. Beginning in the mid-1970's, the extreme living conditions of Harlem and demands of his religious calling provided subject matter for his painting. Urban decay and ubiquitous public graffiti provide inspiration for compositions that include highly stylized writing. By the late 1970's many works incorporate writing exclusively, with areas of layered, obscured and illegible words, very much like repeatedly tagged walls. Education: Studied painting with Maurice Cantlon, Melbourne, Australia 1961-62. Liberal Arts Studies, Christ the King...
