About the Item

Gestural, abstract expressionist oil painting on canvas in earth tones of blue and orche, with pops of green and red Painted by Hudson Valley based artist, James O'Shea in 2021 Oil on canvas, 44 x 44 inches unframed, raw canvas sides Wire backing, ready to hang Signed verso James O’Shea’s deeply pigmented abstractions are grounded in the landscape. Taking his cues from the bare winter months in the Northeast when the horizon is stripped of its foliage, he suggests that “So much of life’s structure reveals itself when it goes into hibernation”. The architecture in O’Shea’s compositions takes form with expressive gestures using brushes loaded with oil paint. Large swaths of earthy tones – teals, blues, greens, and brick red - are bordered by a muscular yet nimble line. This year’s exhibit will also debut a series of portraits of commuters on NYC transit. O’Shea’s signature palette is echoed in these close cropped studies of strangers that are nothing short of intriguing. James O’Shea was born in Buffalo, NY and studied in London at the City and Guilds of London Art School. He also attended Goldsmith’s College and the University of London where he majored in printmaking. Since moving to New York City in 1975, O’Shea continues to experiment with different media, but works mostly in oil and encaustics. Today, he spends his time between Barrytown, NY and Manhattan. About the artist: O'Shea's compositions of layered colors and shapes, seeming architectural and yet organic, are inspired by experiences near his studio on the Hudson River. The artist's interest in the energy surrounding nature's changing of seasons is clear as each color and shape come to represent a particular time of day or year. O’Shea finds revelation in observing the world while it’s deep in hibernation during the winter months. With foliage shed from the trees, therein lies nature’s defining qualities – branches that are finely etched against blue and gray winter skies, animals that are exposed to the elements, their tracks in the snow leaving proof of scurried movements. These characteristics of the land can only truly be known when it is cold and summer’s distractions are put to rest. James O'Shea was born in 1952 in Buffalo, New York. He lived in London from 1970 to 1975 where he attended the City and Guilds of London Art School studying with Eric Morby. He also attended Goldsmith's College and the University of London, where he majored in printmaking. Moving to New York in 1975, he spent 10 years life drawing and investigating color. He experiments in most media, and is now primarily interested in oils and encaustic paints. In 2004, he exhibited his work at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Connecticut, in a one man show. In 2006 he exhibited at Paesaggio Fine Arts’ 100 Pearl Street Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut. O’Shea has also shown at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, NY, and the Guildhall in London. His work is included in many private collections. Mr. O’Shea divides his time between New York City and the Hudson River Valley.
