Joseph Duncan
"Owl by Night" A Post-War Expressionistic Oil Painting by British Joseph Duncan

1967-1969

About the Item

Introducing a beautifully gripping post-war oil painting by British artist Joseph Duncan. Within this intense expressionistic work, the powerful use of colors ranging from dark green and blue to striking hues of red and yellow, interweaved with splashes of silver paint, renders a captivating and evocative effect on the viewers. There are parallels and similarities within this painting that can be drawn to the CoBrA movement, which was prevalent during the same time Joseph Duncan was settled in Paris. With his painting technique, Duncan creates a unique effect where signs, heads, flowers, and eyes appear in the spots and splashes, creating a dramatic and thrilling visual experience. This oil painting is countersigned by the artist with the signature "Duncan" located in the front lower right of the painting. On the reverse side of the canvas, it is signed "Joseph Duncan" and is dated "67-69". The painting is titled "Owl by night" and "21 Rue Michel le Comte 3rd arr.", which is a reference to a Parisian street with the equivalent name in the Marais district. The painting is made with oil paint on paper which is then mounted on top of canvas. The painting is elegantly displayed in a bespoke floating frame that compliments its details. The unframed dimensions are 73cm x 50cm/28.7in x 19.6in, while the framed dimensions are 86cm x 63cm/33.8in x 24.8in. The painting is in good condition and is ready to hang. Joseph Duncan (1920) was born in London and honed his skills at the Slade School of London from 1944-1949. He went on to teach at the Guilford School of Art, and in the 1950s, traveled extensively to France and Italy to showcase his art. He developed a deep connection with the regions of Vance in the South of France, Paris, Milan, and Sardinia before finally settling in the picturesque district of Marais, Paris.
