About the Item
Super Tricycle is a large contemporary abstract painting by Cuban artist Juan Lazaro. It features a deconstructed yellow tricycle on a yellow background. The acrylic paint is complemented with ballpoint pen and bits of cardboard to give the painting texture.
Lazaro’s bikes are re-engineered to break away from the complete forms that make them so recognizable, yet keep realistic elements. The original bicycle was invented in 1817, but today it has electric motors, batteries, accelerators, and every crazy part you can think of. But the core of this technology is the bike you learned to ride when you were seven years old, the bike you took to down the driveway to the park, the bike that we all have fond memories of. No matter how much you reconstruct it or replace parts with wild colorful strokes of acrylic paint, the bike is still the beloved method of movement that unites us in this modern age.

Born in Manuel, Cuba in 1973, Juan Lazaro is a painter who focuses his vision on the bicycle. His abstract works with forms floating on a virtually monochrome ground are evocative of the 20th century inventions of Paul Klee. It is the intriguing puzzle of these forms that draws the viewer into the works where enigmas and paradoxes confound the senses. Lazaro deconstructs the universal bicycle into colorful parts that splash out onto the viewer.
