About the Item
This painting is part of a series of work titled Deja Vu. The series is inspired by the feeling of having aleady experienced something even though it is new and unfamiliar. The elements in the painting are formed from overpainting an underlayer of colour and form so that only fragments of the underlayer remain. This creates forms that are abstract, nebulous and intangible. Gradually throuought the remaning painting process, I have tried to 'make sense' of these forms, grasping at a new pictorial narrative.
Judith North’s paintings often explore interior and exterior spaces or contemplate single objects. These spaces and objects, rooted in the real world, are constructed from observation and memory and tend to be devoid of context. Her painting process, involving the application and removal of successive layers of paint is part of her search to find equilibrium between the real and the imagined. She is attracted to the geometry in a subject and uses colour and composition to help create a sense of emotion and atmosphere. Born in Bristol, Judith graduated in fine art from the Sir John Cass School of Art and Design, London, having originally studied art history and mathematics.
