About the Item
Katheryn Holt (American, born 1951)
"Purple Noon" 2022
Oil paint, Mixed Media, Wood Panel, Wood
The artist signed the back of the painting.
At the uppermost layer, a delicate dance of white, various shades of purple, and nuanced browns coalesce to evoke the essence of a seascape after the sun has set. It's a moment of tranquility, where nature's beauty reveals itself in the twilight. Beneath this enchanting palette lies a thin layer of gentle yellow, followed by a soft embrace of lighter orange. These layers infuse the composition with a sense of warmth, reminiscent of the moments that precede the late night's deep serenity.
About the Artist:
Katheryn Holt is a painter who skillfully translates memory into abstract artworks. Since the age of four, she has been documenting her interior and exterior worlds through painting. Raised in the vibrant landscape of Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, during the 1950s and 1960s, her art draws inspiration from endless Pacific horizons and the post-World War II American culture. Holt holds a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design and taught at New York's School of Visual Arts. She is celebrated for her work, receiving awards from the Society of Illustrators and accolades in publications like 'American Illustrator' and 'Outstanding American Illustrators.' Her art has graced solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. and Germany, and she's secured a place in the permanent collection of the Kunst Museum, Hollfeld, Germany. Katheryn Holt's paintings are a testament to the enduring power of memory, captivating audiences with their abstract allure.

Katheryn Holt paints memory. Her abstract paintings are infused with half-remembered landscapes. She has been documenting her interior and exterior life through painting since she was 4 years old. Growing up on Hermosa Beach, Los Angeles, in the 1950s and 1960s, her frame of visual references was formed both by horizon lines extending across a seemingly endless Pacific Ocean and the cultural influences of post-World War 2 America. Holt studied painting at the University of Southern California and graduated with a B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design. She taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts, has won awards from the Society of Illustrators, and was included in American Illustrator and Outstanding American Illustrators. She has exhibited in many solo and group shows, including eight shows at Tria Gallery, New York; national juried competitions including the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, the Santa Cruz Art League, and the Bolinas Museum; and was featured in a recent display in the windows of Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco. She won first place at the American Pastel Society and is part of the permanent collection in the Kunst Museum, Hollfeld, Germany. Her work has been shown in New York, Germany, Texas, Georgia, Colorado, and California. Solo Exhibitions "Desta at the Depot,” Mill Valley, CA, 2023

Störbild Orange Rosa by Skadi Engeln Contemporary Abstract Blurry Painting
Located in DE
Skadi Engeln, a Berlin- and France-based artist, studied sculpture at FH Ottersberg with Robert van de Laar and painting with Michael Kohr and Hermanus Westendorp. Her work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in cities like Berlin, Düsseldorf, Paris, New York, and more, and is part of international collections.
Engeln explores landscape as a dynamic, ever-changing entity dissolving into light, water, and weather, only to reassemble itself. Like painting, landscapes blur the line between the visible and the hidden, revealing deeper truths in their transitions. The horizon plays a central role in her work, both separating and connecting what lies above and below, the seen and the concealed. Rather than decoding these layers, she preserves their mystery and beauty.
Since 2001, she has focused on abstract landscape painting. Her recent works depict landscapes veiled by lines, stripes, and distortions, creating a sense of distance, like reflections in a train window...

Artist's Commentary:
"In this piece, I've experimented with the textural qualities of oil and sand to construct a symphony of layered landscapes. The geometric and semi-abstract shapes engage in a symbolic dance, evoking a sense of tranquility. Like gentle whispers of color extending across a peaceful canvas, it embodies a tribute to serene contemplation. It will infuse any setting with a tranquil, reflective ambiance, encouraging viewers to pause and seek harmony."
