About the Item
"Ohne Titel (Merzbild Mit Schuhsohle) (Untitled (Merz Picture with Shoe Sole))" is an abstract Post War oil and relief assemblage on plywood painting made by Kurt Schwitters in 1945. The artwork is 21 1/4 x 17 3/4 inches and is 39 1/2 x 34 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches with the frame, weighing less than 50 lbs. It is signed in paint, lower right, "KS 45".
Kurt Schwitters was a German artist renowned for his innovative approach to painting, collage, and mixed media. Schwitters developed a distinctive style that blurred the boundaries between fine art and common materials. His technique, known as "Merz," involved the assemblage of fragmented, everyday items into abstract, yet expressive artworks. n this artwork, Schwitters incorporates a found shoe sole into the composition, blending it with paper, fabric, and other detritus to create a dynamic, abstract collage.
