About the Item

The green calligraphic strokes in this triptych are Mudras, those symbolic hand positions that gathering and releasing energy. Through the painted gestures regular patterns, integral to Japanese aesthetics, suggest a stability overlaying spirit. The images are worn and fading honoring the seasoning process of time. The small, inserted etchings indicate yet another layer of worlds. This triptych is reminiscent of the back rooms of Shinju-an temple in Kyoto, where paint cracks and peels from images on old sliding wooden doors area appreciated with no intent to fix Although Majio makes no conscious effort to make Japanese art her apprenticeships in ceramics, papermaking and the cultural arts show up unbidden. Gold is often the empty space that suggests and/or conceals. The juxtaposition of incongruent things invites in story and poetry rather than contractions. The spirit of Majio’s aikido practice was alive much later in dancing Argentine tango, which is present in the small gold icon pieces of tango paper dolls.
