About the Item
Here we have an abstract composition composed of hands, a reptilian-like figure, and a string instrument. All three subjects are joined together, creating an otherworldly like being.
Marc Sterling, born in Pryluky, Ukraine, was an icon painter and later enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow. He became involved in the Russian avant-garde movements and met revolutionary artists like Mayakovsky. Sterling moved to Berlin in 1922 and married Basia, who later became his wife. They settled in Paris in 1923 and signed a contract with the Zak gallery. During World War II, Sterling lost touch with the artistic community in Paris. He returned in 1947, acquired French nationality, and exhibited his work internationally. He married Swiss sculptor Eliane in 1953 and settled in Peseux, Switzerland. (Ecole De Paris)
