About the Item

Zennor Calling (III) By Mary Scott [2022] original and hand signed by the artist Acrylic and pencil on cradled panel Image size: H:51 cm x W:61 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:51 cm x W:61 cm x D:2cm Frame Size: H:58 cm x W:68 cm x D:3cm Sold Framed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Zennor Calling (III) is an original work by Mary Scott. This is the third in a series of four abstract landscapes inspired by the cliff path between the busy harbour town of St Ives and the remote village of Zennor, some six miles to the south west. One of the first walks I did when I first started spending time in the St Ives area, some years ago, it quickly became one of my favourites. On a ‘blue sky and turquoise sea kind of day’, every twist and turn, every up and down along the rugged path rewards with achingly beautiful views. The path quickly takes the walker away from the bustle of St Ives towards remote Zennor and the wild Penwith coastline beyond. The painting is a deliberately ambiguous interpretation of the tumbling patchwork of colours of land, sea and sky. The work will be framed in a dark grey blue wood tray frame.

Hush, Tapestry-Like Landscape Painting, Semi-Abstract Mixed Media Artwork
Located in Deddington, GB
“Hush” is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape, space, colour and texture in places I have visited. Some of these are specific to landscapes around my studio in Surrey, the South Downs and Devon but mostly they are a visual amalgamation of experiences, like a patchwork of memories and feelings from one or many places. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks which reflect the shadowy-shape of evergreen trees against more open hills and meadows. I see more when I’m not focused on the detail, painting intuitively with a mix of acrylics, inks, chalk and oil pastels to capture an emotive response to a place rather than the reality of a specific landscape. Brush strokes and marks are layered and carved with fluid lines that create imagined dream-like patterns. “Hush” is painted on a wood panel with muted shades of slate, moss, pebble and shell, contrasted with a bold graphic swathe of charcoal. If painting still respects a logic that legitimizes its practice and existence in our hyper-saturated civilization of the image, it is its ability to break the representation, to open a crack on the slippery LCD surface behind which reality takes shape and action, a crack that even if it was imperceptible, has permanent and incisive effects, destined as it is to open more and more. And it’s just around the idea of the crack that Giorgio Petracci...
