About the Item
This painting, titled What Remains, presents a haunting yet vivid interpretation of a barren, abstracted landscape. The composition is divided into two primary zones: a stark white foreground and a dark, dense green sky or upper field. Dominating the upper half is a bold, glowing red circle—interpretable as a sun—radiating heat and intensity, suggesting environmental stress or desolation.
Vertical elements resembling burnt or broken tree trunks rise from the lower plane into the green space, their rough, textured edges and orange-red highlights evoking damage, perhaps from fire or decay. The landscape is stripped down, flat, and minimal, yet charged with emotion and implied narrative.
Bright flashes of color—lime green, cobalt blue, orange—punctuate the horizon line like distant fires, artificial lights, or symbolic ruptures in nature. In the lower right and center, fragments of canvas and painted shapes—and bits of collage—add tactile depth and hint at human presence or intervention now abandoned or decayed.
The painting straddles the line between abstraction and representation, offering viewers an open-ended narrative: a land stripped of life, haunted by what once was, and marked by what remains. It invites interpretation around environmental collapse, memory, and isolation in a world altered by both natural and manmade forces.
Matt Higgins b. 1987 is both an artist and an art professor based in Philadelphia, PA. He engages in a consistent studio practice, with a primary focus on painting across various bodies of work. He received his BFA from West Chester University in 2011 and his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2017. As well as maintaining a regular studio practice, he teaches at a few schools in the area including Drexel University, Delaware County Community College and Moore College of Art and Design. His art is included in numerous private collections and has been featured in a diverse range of interior design projects, spanning residential properties, corporations, and hotels. Both his home and studio are located in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia, where he lives with his wife and son.
Matt Higgins is an artist and art professor who lives and works in Philadelphia, Pa. He received his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and BFA from West Chester University. His work is included in numerous private and public collections throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His various bodies of work focus on themes of abstraction, the landscape and text based paintings. His work can be viewed as a constant progression, as well as a cycle from one body of work to the next. He often times returns to existing themes or motifs with a fresh outlook after departing for periods of time. Growth and learning is a significant part of the artists practice and this continued openness and exploration is what keeps his work fresh and original from one body of work to the next, never settling for predictability or the mundane.
