About the Item
A painting by Carl Morris. "Untitled" is an Abstract Expressionist triptych painting, acrylic on canvas in blues and oranges by American artist Carl Morris. The artwork is signed on the verso, "Carl Morris". The dimensions mentioned are for each piece for a total of 30 x 83 1/2 x 1 1/2 in. Born in Yorba Linda, Calif., in 1911, Carl Morris studied at the Chicago Art Institute, as well as in Vienna and Paris, before he became director of the Spokane Art Center in Washington and, eventually, the most important painter to establish himself in Oregon. From an aesthetic perspective, he fit in with the New York School painters was counted Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell, as well as the Northwest School’s Mark Tobey, among his friends and colleagues. However, Morris took his inspiration from the transcendent power of nature and created work loaded with references to the mountains, land, and sky. The Heather James selection spans from the 1960s to the ’90s, showing how his abstracted landscapes and geological formations evolved. Like many Abstract Expressionists, Morris began his career making figurative paintings; he was interested in social realism in the Works Progress Administration (WPA) spirit. His figures became more abstract in the mid-1940s, when hints of cubism surfaced in his work. By the early 1950s, as evident in his Machine paintings and his depictions of the landscape outside his house, his work became fully abstract. Morris has been included in many exhibitions at the Metropolitan, Whitney, and Guggenheim museums in New York. Provenance: Estate of the Artist.

Abstract geometric artwork by a contemporary artist Gerald Wolfe.
Gerald Wolfe’s wall pieces have a three-dimensional, architectural feel. The artist’s approach to his paintings is intuitive. He meticulously creates his works step by step, imbuing shapes and lines with energy. The interplay of forms, color, and texture creates tension between flatness and depth. His work can become a unique gift and will be a wonderful addition to any space, be it a living room of a modern home or a lobby of a commercial building.
Gerald Wolfe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Maryland in 1972, discovered his interest in art and went on to study fine arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In the summer of 1974, he also studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. From his first show in 1979, a summer invitational at OK Harris Gallery, Gerald has shown his work on a consistent basis in New York, including such galleries as Denise Bibro Fine Art, NYC, and Kim Foster Gallery, NYC . In addition, he has had solo exhibits at the Paterson Museum in Paterson, New Jersey...
