This painting by Ned Martin is both abstract and representational, as it depicts a swan at the center of the canvas that is floating in water, while the surrounding area is rendered with the artist's signature abstracted style. The piece, which is primarily blue, orange, deep umber, and white, was made by placing aluminum panel fragments on top of a wood panel, and later painting over top of both materials. It is wired and ready to hang.

Embracing his training and his meticulous process, Martin grinds his own paints. He has painted en plein air on the River Seine in Paris, Scotland, and Italy, all of which have shaped his artistic vision.
Ned Martins ays of his work, “I have long believed artists are like mirrors. My job is to reflect that which others are missing while they go about their busy lives. I somehow wish my paintings were less biased, yet, my own emotions from life experiences are in every painting I create. While I still struggle with the idea, I must be completely honest that every painting is a self-portrait.”

Reclaimed aluminum printing plates have become Martin’s sole painting surface. He often leaves a bit of aluminum plate visible through the painted surface to enhance the depth of the work. “The imagery of the used printing plates is part of my expression—current social commentary that becomes embedded in the art forever,” Martin explains.
