About the Item
Represented by George Billis Gallery, NYC & LA -- Pulling imagery and motif from organic form, architecture, media and design I create densely layered, mixed-media paintings that are invested in process and grounded in traditional craft. I’m interested in the overlap of nature and culture and the patterns present in both; the tension between them drives my exploration of color, surface and materiality.
Employing labor-intensive technique, I blend painting, collage and printmaking processes. I primarily work on wood and paper in multiple panels, incorporating paint, charcoal, ink, tape, ballpoint pen, canvas and metal. Simultaneously free and constrained, my paintings are composed of numerous overlapping layers, many of which are obscured in the cumulative evolution of a finished piece. Often a prominent element of my work is the application of thousands of beads of paint, painstakingly and individually applied with a brush and used to create screens, patterns and color gradations.
Reproduction and repetition being central themes, my paintings are responses to things mass-produced and processed to an ideal. My paintings are, by nature, imprecise and hand-made objects. Perfection is unattainable therefore each piece is unique—it is this inherent quality that continues to engage me in painting.
Nina Tichava was raised in both rural northern New Mexico and the Bay Area in California. She was influenced by her father, a construction worker and mathematician —and by her mother, who is an artist and designer. The reflections of these dualities—country to city, pragmatist to artist, nature to technology—are essential to and evident in her paintings. Nina received her BFA from California College of the Arts [+ Crafts].

Nina Tichava
Nina Tichava is a pattern-based, abstract painter primarily focused on spatial relationships that consider the inherent surface, color, and visual variations in her work. She's influenced by dualities: hard vs. soft, fast vs. slow, calm vs. frenetic, and interested in the interactions between materials and methods that develop within her highly organic process. Nina is the 2007 recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award Grant and has exhibited professionally since 2009. Tichava’s work is featured in numerous private, corporate, and public collections including Delta Airlines, Seattle WA; the City of Seattle Permanent Collection, Seattle WA; Fenwick and West LLP, Silicon Valley, CA; Harcos-Huneke Collection, Miramonte CA; Swedish Hospital, Seattle WA; the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle WA; Seattle City Light Public Utility Collection, Seattle WA; Jewish Community Center and Foundation, Denver CO. She received her BFA from California College of the Arts [+ Crafts] in San Francisco/Oakland and has exhibited in all major national art fairs including Miami, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Dallas, New York, Aspen, Seattle, and San Francisco.

Abstract. Vibrant. Painting.
About the Artist:
"I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels."
