About the Item

Artist: RHODA TJITAYI, (1969 -), Titre: Piltati Tjukurpa 200x300 cm - 2021 Acrylique on canvas réf:15021AS Biography: Rhoda Tjitayi’s monumental paintings reflect the richness of Indigenous views on relationships, truth, and time. A skilled artist, she is also a Pitjantjatjara-language translator and singer-songwriter. Her work draws from stories passed down by her grandmother, whose roots are in Makiri — a sacred place for Honey Ant women. Rhoda remembers sitting with her grandmother as she painted, sang, and shared these ancestral stories. Rhoda now passes these traditions to her own children and grandchildren through painting, singing, and dancing. A long-time resident of the Pukatja (Ernabella) community, her art channels ancient energies of the land and gives form to the deep narratives tied to it. She has recently focused on helping younger generations connect with Indigenous cultural practices, especially in Pukatja and Amata. Her paintings reimagine intergenerational responsibility, offering outsiders a way to engage with her grandmother’s land through art exhibited further south, on Kaurna Yarta. At the 2022 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Free/State, her series Piltati Tjukurpa spanned up to five meters and portrayed different perspectives on her matrilineal homeland, Makiri. Her work is also featured on Orange Sky’s energy-efficient Waru Dryer, symbolizing innovation rooted in ancestral lands. Prix: 2022, Adelaide biennial of Australian Art, Art Gallery of South Australia – Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes, Art Gallery of NSW.
