About the Item
This is one in a series of elegant abstract compositions Shireen Kamran created to remember the forced exodus of many people from the town of Suluk, Syria. Using paper collage and acrylic paints, the richness of the color palette is reminiscent of a trip to the spice market. Muted shades of ochre, olive, and indigo contrast with black, clay, and bright white. This piece, in form and color, was influenced by fabled abstract artists, De Kooning, Rembrandt, and Picasso. Kamran’s work also honors her Pakistani heritage, often referencing a form of Islamic mysticism called Sufi.

She received a BSc. degree from the University of Peshawar and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Her work is held in private collections in Canada and abroad. Shireen Kamran
Shireen Kamran creates lyrical and dramatic works reflecting restless mobility, a sensitivity to cultural displacement, and a memory of people and places. Her abstract layered forms may bring to mind silhouetted architecture, minarets and towers. Kamran's titles refer to shared layers and lineages of human experience. Kamran received a B.Sc. degree from the University of Peshawer and a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal.
