About the Item
This original plein-air oil painting captures a poignant moment in Shizico’s garden, where 130-year-old lime trees stand guard at the entrance. The work is also a personal tribute to her late partner, who often lingered in the garden corner—cigarette in hand—watching the sky shift and dissolve the day’s worries.
Often, from inside the house, Shizico would glimpse these private moments; and often, the two would exchange glances through the window, smiles carrying an unspoken understanding and a shared appreciation of nature’s quiet beauty.
This painting belongs to Shizico Yi’s ongoing project Constant Gardener, developed since 2015. It also resonates with her later series, Golden Sunlit, where she introduced the vibrant hue of yellow bringing her narratives with warmth and renewal. For Shizico, yellow carries a healing energy, especially for those navigating grief.
In this work, the application of 18K gold leaf highlights the preciousness of loving memory, transforming light and colour into a tender act of remembrance.
Parallel to her gardening endeavours, Shizico Yi works on a series of drawings and plein air paintings within this Memorial Garden in the last decade; capturing the essence of the blossoms and seasons, freezing them in timeless representations.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London based artist, working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories .
With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
