About the Item
This special large Ink, Oil and Gold leaf on canvas created by Shizico in early autumn, her Cat and his toy takes centre stage in her studio full with house plants. The pictorial language in this series pays homage to Japanese Woodblock prints; Shizico sees Cat a symbol of innocence, joy and good fortune, brighten up our everyday life and inner peace.
This painting also challenges the genre of paintings in contemporary art. It is a testament to Shizico's creativity and her willingness to push boundaries in advancing her visual language through materials and colours while grounded in the history of art; her work is rooted in a lineage that spans from El Greco to Hiroshige to Matisse to Van Gogh.
Each painting is deeply personal by focusing on Shizico's every day and things around her. This approach ties her work to the seasons and the fleeting moments of time. Each painting is a one-of-a-kind, ephemeral and unrepeatable. Once completed, it captures a moment that is forever gone, making Shizico’s artwork uniquely rare and authentically tied to the essence of impermanence.
Renowned for her expressive Ink drawing and its distinctive visual language, Shizico captures the raw essence of her artistic vision in this painting with Gold Leaf and Ink on canvas; documents and preserves the fleeting beauty of life and the sweet memories it holds, froze in time on paper.
Shizico Yi paints most of her paintings in situ and from life. She began gardening in 2015 to create a healing space for her elderly, ailing dog. After her Labrador passed away, both her gardens indoor and outdoor became wellspring of inspirations for her art—places of solace and healing safe-space where grief and creativity intertwine.
Like a modern-day Monet, Shizico has built her life and studio around greenery and nature over the decade, reaping the rewards of her labour as gardens inspire her while serves as a living studio where she makes her own kind of landscapes.
