About the Artist:
Sidney Guberman was born in 1936 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Showing artistic promise early on, he studied with regional artists Lew Tilley and Jean Charlot during his youth at the Fountain Valley School.
He later attended Princeton University, which at the time offered no formal painting courses. Nevertheless, Guberman pursued his passion independently, producing drawings and collages, and later participated in the university’s inaugural artist-in-residence program with painter Stephen Greene in 1956.
After a career in architecture, Guberman dedicated himself fully to art in 1969, developing a distinctive voice in painting, sculpture, and printmaking. He taught extensively in Switzerland and the United States, including at Ecole des Beaux Arts Lausanne, Princeton University, and the Atlanta College of Art. His contributions were recognized with an NEA grant in 1980 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988.
