This large-scale vintage work features dynamic brushwork and a richly layered palette of black, violet blue, bright coral pink, teal green, brown, pale orange, and gray-green. This rare piece is ideal for collectors of large-format abstract art and mid- to late-20th century American painting.
About the Artist:
Sidney Guberman was born in 1936 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Showing artistic promise early on, he studied with regional artists Lew Tilley and Jean Charlot during his youth at the Fountain Valley School.
He later attended Princeton University, which at the time offered no formal painting courses. Nevertheless, Guberman pursued his passion independently, producing drawings and collages, and later participated in the university’s inaugural artist-in-residence program with painter Stephen Greene in 1956.
After a career in architecture, Guberman dedicated himself fully to art in 1969, developing a distinctive voice in painting, sculpture, and printmaking. He taught extensively in Switzerland and the United States, including at Ecole des Beaux Arts Lausanne, Princeton University, and the Atlanta College of Art. His contributions were recognized with an NEA grant in 1980 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988.

Sidney Guberman
Sidney Guberman was born in 1936 in Colorado Springs, Colorado and showed artistic talent from an early age. As a youth he studied with local Colorado Springs artists Lew Tilley and Jean Charlot at the Fountain Valley School. Guberman went to Princeton, where at that time there were no courses in painting. He continued to work on his own, however, producing drawings and small collages. In 1956, Princeton initiated its artist-in-residence program with artist Stephen Greene, which Guberman took part in. After leaving architecture in 1969, Guberman began creating painting, sculpture and prints full time. He has taught painting, drawing, basic design and color theory in Switzerland and in the US, including The Ecole des Beaux Arts, Lausanne (1971-73), Ecole Polytechnique Federale (1973-1975), Princeton University (1980-1981), University of South Carolina (1990) and the Atlanta College of Art (1990). He received an individual grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980 and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1988. Collections: The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The High Museum, The Hunter Museum and the Gibbes Museum.

This work is one of two earlier works consisting of brush acrylic painted pavatex.
The pavatex surface is flat, the painted motive is handmade without using tape for hard edges, creating a soft appearance.
The work is treating the figure-ground problem in a playful way, using contrasting colours, creating a pending moment of the elements.
