Myth of Sisyphus VIII (Starting out from the absurd over the ruins of reason)

2022

About the Item

"Myth of Sisyphus VIII (Starting out from the absurd over the ruins of reason)" is an original contemporary painting by Georgia-based artist Vivian Liddell. This work is part of her new 2022 series titled "Myth of Sisyphus." As a multidisciplinary artist, Liddell brings a dynamic approach to her vivid, colorful two-dimensional pieces. This particular piece has a bold contrast between pink chains and white roman pillars in the foreground and a black background. Images are examples of similar works framed. From the artist: "Gender and power are core concepts in my work. I’ve spent two decades in “The Classic City” (Athens, Georgia), surrounded by a dual Greek culture. Fraternities and sororities separate students by gender and play a part in cementing gender roles and power structures for the next generation; ubiquitous Classical architecture (often accompanied by manicured landscape) is a constant reminder of Western ideals. After a career of painting the female figure and exploring themes related to the male gaze and the lingering inequalities that women face, I’ve focused the past five years on the male figure and his domain. My education was dominated by Western art history, where women were seen as muses; I’m reversing this traditional dynamic between the male artist/intellectual and his female subject. I create tiny “plays” with handmade props and puppet plasticine figures to reenact imagined dramas that might happen on any given home game day. These sets become animations but also act as narrative anchors and maquettes for works in a variety of media. Even though my work relies on humor, I’m asking serious questions about how branding, everyday rituals, and consumerism play into established power dynamics. These works accompany an animation in progress that addresses the Greek myth of Sisyphus. After witnessing some fraternity recruits carrying rocks up a hill during Rush Week, I was inspired to dive deeper into the mythology and have been playing with imagery that includes rocks and Greek columns as a way to continue exploring how gender, everyday rituals, and power structures are intertwined. The parenthetical titles in these works come from the "Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus. His work addresses the idea that the artist, like Sisyphus, is a hero of the absurd." We will ship this via standard parcel boxed with internal support to maintain the piece's integrity. The work will be fully insured during shipping. If you prefer a different shipping method, inquire; we are happy to accommodate your requests. Our first priorities are our collectors' satisfaction and the artwork's safety in transit. Handling time will be 2-3 business days, and shipping will be 2-5 business days from the date of order confirmation.
