Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare.
Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was a distinguished British painter best known for his refined and dynamic portrayals of horses, particularly in military and sporting scenes. Born in 1829 into a well-connected family, Lutyens combined artistic talent with a deep understanding of horses, cultivated during his early years as a cavalry officer in the British Army.
His military background gave him firsthand knowledge of equine anatomy, movement, and behavior—qualities that translated into his art with remarkable authenticity. Lutyens specialized in equestrian portraits and scenes that captured the elegance, power, and disciplined grace of cavalry horses and their riders. His work resonated especially with Britain’s upper classes, who shared his admiration for horsemanship.
While Lutyens did not become a household name, his work was respected in artistic and military circles alike, and he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other institutions throughout the 19th century. His paintings, often commissioned, celebrated both individual horses and the proud traditions of British equestrian culture.
Perhaps most famously, Lutyens was the father of Sir Edwin Lutyens, one of the greatest British architects of the 20th century—a legacy of creativity that extended beyond the canvas.

Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens
Charles Augustus Henry Lutyens was born into an illustrious family with numerous connections to the British Army. His parents, General Charles Lutyens and Frances Jane Fludger. His father was appointed Deputy Commissary General of the Army, a civilian appointment responsible for military procurement. He also served on the staff of General Moore in the Peninsular Campaign and wrote an impressive journal recording the horrors of the ill-fated Retreat on Corunna, escaping from Napoleon’s General Marshall Soult. Charles Lutyens spent his early adult life in the Army, joining the 20th foot and sailed with them in 1850 to serve in Canada. In 1857, he left the army to take up life as a professional artist. He based himself at Onslow Square, London where he soon established a fashionable practice. During this period, Lutyens became a friend of Sir Edwin Landseer, and after him, he named his son in 1863. His patrons included the Duchess of Montrose, Lord Bradford and the Duke of Portland. A companion painting to this was sold by Brightwells in 2018. He was an inventory officer serving in the 20th foot (which became The Lancashire Fusiliers), an artillery officer and later a sculptor, a painter of portraits, animals (particularly horses) and sporting scenes such as racing and hunting. Lutyens exhibited between 1861 and 1903 at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colors, British Institution, Grosvenor Gallery, Dudley Museum & Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery and the Royal Society of British Artists.

A lovely landscape painting of sheep on a coastal cliff by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. The sheep and her two lambs are depicted against the backdrop of the sea with shipping and chalk cliffs in the distance. The location is likely to be the Devon coast, an area Jones visited often.
Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
By 1867, he had become a successful artist and had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874, he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
