About the Item
Massive size, this six foot long oil painting by Charles Jones (1836-1902) makes an impression! Award-winning artist, Jones won the gold medal at the Crystal Palace exhibition in 1890 for his distinctive style depicting animals, particularly cows and sheep, in sweeping rural and mountain landscapes. Titled 'Highland Cattle' this work is typical of his style, painting woolly cows in a Highland scene. Signed with the distinctive monogram and dated '70 in red, this oil on canvas painting has no less than 17 cows, two dogs and a figure in a mountain landscape with an old stone bridge, and cottages on a hill.
Jones was born in Wales, but spent most of his career working in London. His paintings often depicted Scottish scenes as well as Welsh and English. Jones graduated from the Royal College of Art and became a successful artist, flourishing from 1860s to 1890s. His work is well represented in collections including the National Trust, National Library of Wales, National Museum in Wales, Art Museums and Art Galleries.
This painting came from an estate of a family in England that later moved to British Columbia, Canada. It was imported by Saltire Gallerie in the USA.
The painting is presented in a modern bronzed metal framing. It was shipped with an older gesso and wood frame that sustained damage. However, this 19th century painting presents very well in this simple bronze metal surrounding. Ideal for a commercial setting, this painting also works remarkably well in both traditional and contemporary room designs. Sold with the bronzed metal, the traditional frame may also be purchased with this painting. Please inquire if the traditional frame is preferred. The older frame is stable, with losses and damage.
This painting has been substantially restored, with probably wax re-lining, and in-painting visible with UV light mostly in the right side of sky, some grasses and small areas of a couple cows, A thick layer of clear varnish covers the painting, giving the work shine and protection. Small areas of craquelure are visible under the varnish. One small paint loss in the sky is noted and old abrasions on edges are visible that are all stable now with the layer of varnish.
Ready to hang, this large painting will stand out on any wall,
